“She is of my blood too,” I say. “She will have magic and he is the best trainer for her to not grow up like I did, cut off and not understanding it when it came.”

“You could train her,” Duncan says, speaking only to me.

“No, not properly. I never trained. I crash coursed and got lucky. I’d have better for her.”

Duncan frowns, closes his eyes, then nods.

“What name do you have in mind then?” he asks.

I purse my lips, knowing exactly what name I want to give her but unsure if he will like it. When I look down at her, it fits. In some ways she truly reminds me of the namesake.

“Savannah,” I say, and she opens her eye and a smile spreads across her little face so wide that it breaks her seal on my breast.

“Savannah,” Duncan says, rolling it off his tongue. “Aye. That is a right fine name.”

“I agree,” Dugald says. He slowly walks closer, then holds his hand out and touches her head. Duncan watches warily but I trust him. “You will live a life of love and peace. You will make those who meet you better for having known you. And you will carry on your mother’s blood into the future. Making sure it is there when it is needed. All our blessings go with you, young Savannah. Welcome to your new home.”

It’s a beautiful prayer and I can’t help but smile. Savannah coos, her tiny fingers clenching at empty air as if she is grasping motes of light.

“Thank you, Dugald,” I say, but there’s a woosh and when I look up, he’s gone.

“Showman,” Duncan mutters, but then he leans down and kisses our daughter’s head. “My dear Savannah. You’re going to be a handful.”

“Aye,” I laugh. “But she’ll beourhandful.”

“Aye,” he says, and we kiss over our newborn’s head.

I thought I had everything I ever wanted when Duncan and I married. I was wrong. Now, though, now I truly have it all.
