I stood and tried to sound confident.

“I need to rest now. Thank you for stopping by.”

Alder gave me a quick hug.

“You’re not very good at throwing people out of your apartment, Waggoner. Next time, try telling me to get lost or to never darken your doorstep again.”

“Somehow, I don’t think that will work.”

“It won’t.” He beamed at me and I couldn’t help but smile back. Alder was like that. More a force of nature than a human being. He began to walk back to the front door.

“I really do appreciate you stopping by.”

“I know. And I know I talk a lot but I do mean what I say: you’ve got a hot young alpha just waiting to give you a good seeing to. I think you should consider taking him up on his offer. It’ll do you both good.”

“Please never talk about anyone giving me ‘a good seeing to’ again.”

“Only if I don’t have to. When you’ve been sexed out and satisfied.”

“Seriously, you do remember I’m your boss, right?”

“I’m sorry, I have no idea what you’re talking about. You must be mistaking me for someone else. Is it that concussion?”

I was already laughing as I said, “I don’t have a concussion. I never did.”

“Well you got away with it, then. I’m glad you made it out in as good a condition as you did.”

For a second, I remembered being on the cold ground, my body aching with the sudden fall, crunched up in fear and the alpha looming over me, foot raised. I swallowed.

“Yeah. I’ll be fine in a few days.”

“Two weeks. You’re not coming back for two weeks. I’ve already cleared it with the Dean. You need to take care of your body. You can heal it and your alpha can pleasure it.”

I closed the door on him with a snap and heard him cackle with laughter on the other side.

It wasn’t as easy to lock out my thoughts, though. Alder had planted some ideas in my head and it was difficult to shake them loose.

Liam had stayed with me. Because he was a good person? Yes. Definitely. I was sure of that.

But maybe also because he wanted more with me? That was possible.

I needed to think.

As I wandered the apartment, though, it just felt empty. Already, I was used to seeing Liam there, filling the space with his broad shoulders and his warmth. He made me feel safe and interesting and… sexy.

Hecouldlike me. Hecouldwant me. I might not be the most attractive omega and I was well past my prime but I hadn’t completely let myself go. Maybe… maybe he wouldn’t mind that, just for a fling.

It was obvious to me that I wanted him. If the mere possibility that Liam would be interested in me made me this excited, then there was no denying it. And why wouldn’t I want him? He was gorgeous and funny and caring and interesting and he let me cuddle up to him while we watched movies.

Ok, so it didn’t exactly sound like a wild fling. This wouldn’t be a torrid love affair. I was just a bit boring, I guess. But I liked sex and I wanted Liam, so maybe he’d go for it nonetheless. And maybe I should go for it, too. After all, I was getting on and opportunities like this didn’t come my way very often. This might be my last chance to be with someone I really wanted.

And if I could squash down the disappointment in my chest this this was temporary and just enjoy the time we had together, it would be the best time of my life.

Chapter 14: Liam

It turned out that I could watch the CCTV footage of the mugging, once I was in the little security hut on the edge of campus.

The guard said that it was because I was one of the victims and therefore I was entitled to see the footage of myself. From the way the non-presenting man cringed when I asked him what he was doing to catch the mugger, I guessed he was letting me watch it because he was afraid of me. His boss was letting me watch it so I didn’t think about suing them.
