“Why?” Dom furrows his brows. “We were fine earlier. We had a great time yesterday.”

“Yeah, until she found out that you got her out of town so Co and I could shoot that fucking building up.”

“You told her about…”

I hold up my hand to stop him. “No, not the details. She just knowssomethingwent down.”

“Why the fuck would you tell her?” Dominic balls his hand into a fist.

I glance down at it and then at him. "You need to slow your fucking roll, dude. You're the one insisting on lying to her left and right. And now you're pissed because I blurt out one fucking truth. No." I shake my head. "I told you to be honest with her from the start, Dom. This is on fucking you. Don't you blame me for this shit."

Hayes clears his throat. “Explain to me how this goes from her being mad at Dom to whatever the fuck happened?”

I close my eyes and inhale deeply. When I open them again, I spill every last word that Simon had told me. They listen intently to every bit of it until I stop.

“Whoever it was is connected to the original hit ordered against her.”

“No, shit. Sherlock.” I pinch my brow. “Is that really all you fucking gathered?”

Dominic doesn't say anything, instead, he seems lost in thought—like he's trying to puzzle the pieces together.

“You need to tell her the truth.” I cross my arms. “You’re going to lose her if you don’t. We’re all going to.”

“Tell her the truth about what?” June says as she enters the room, a new and proper binding wrapped around her biceps and various bandages covering her face and arms.

Simon follows behind her, his own wounds treated by the doctor. Still, he remains shirtless and sopping wet.

“Why don’t you get changed?” I tell him. “There’s probably something in my room that would fit you. Help yourself.” I make eye contact with June, pleading with her to give me a few more minutes alone with the guys. “Both of you should get out of those clothes before you catch a cold.”

She stares at me for a long second, and I worry that this simple request will put me on the shit list with Dom and Co, a place that seems impossible to escape from.

“Fine.” She latches onto Simon and pulls him toward the stairs, the two of them leaving us here with the doctor.

Murphy approaches and sets a vial on the counter. “She’ll need to take four of these daily for the first seven days. And I’d like to check the wound in a few days to make sure there’s no sign of infection. You guys can keep an eye on it. You know what to look for. Change the bandage in twenty-four hours unless it becomes wet or dirty. And don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns.” Murphy sighs and points to Coen. “And how is yours healing up?”

Coen shrugs. “It’s fine, I’ve had worse.”

Murphy approaches him anyway. "Let me have a look." He peels back the bandage and cranes his head to check it out. "More swollen than I'd prefer. Are you taking the antibiotics I prescribed?"

“Yeah, I think so.”

“It isn’t the wound you need to be concerned about. It’s the infection that can come after.” Murphy turns toward all of us. “This isn’t our first rodeo, boys. Don’t let this be the thing that kills you.” Murphy closes his little briefcase full of supplies and walks toward the door. “I’ll be in touch.”

When he’s finally gone, I say, “Swell guy, that Murph.”

“Yeah,” Dominic agrees. “But I don’t think this is the time or place for the conversation you’re suggesting.”

"Then when?" I grip the counter of the countertop. "After what happened tonight? It’s fucking proof that not telling her is only putting her in even more danger. If she knew the threat then maybe she wouldn't have stormed out. She would have stewed safely upstairs in her room instead of barging outside for any of our enemies to snatch her."

“I can’t believe you two are okay with him being up there with her right now,” Hayes mouths off.

I tilt my head toward him. “I’m sorry, did you miss the part where he saved her life, twice? I don’t care if the two of them are upstairs fucking, as long as she is safe, that is theonlything that matters.”

Coen kicks off from his place at the island and gets right in my face. “Say that again, I fucking dare you.”

I push my chest into his. “Don’t fucking test me, Hayes. I’ve been in this world longer than you, and you might think you’re this Billy fucking badass but you've got another thing coming. I will fucking ruin you.”

Coen reaches into his waistband and pulls out a gun, but not without acting too slow and giving me a chance to rip mine out, too.
