One of the bikes cuts us off and blocks our path. The dude without a helmet seems pretty fucking harmless, but with Simon and the guys, you can never be too cautious.

“Sick bike dude,” he says to Simon.

Simon lifts up his visor. “Thanks. We were just leaving. The cliff is all yours, man.” Simon walks the bike back to clear a path but another bike approaches from our rear.

A few more come up the hill, dust and dirt filling the air.

“Do you know another way down, dude?” the guy asks Simon. “We’ve got a moto cop on our asses.”

Simon sighs and glances toward the group of bikers. “Yeah, follow me.”

Once his visor is shut, I say through our shared headset, “I thought you said you were good with cops?”

“That doesn’t mean I want to deal with them, especially when you’re with me. Imagine having to explain this one to the guys.”

The guy in front of Simon gets out of our way and Simon darts through the gap he creates.

“Hold on, love. It’s going to be rockier than earlier.”

Sinewy and rigid, he is the anchor I grip onto tightly, my arms locked around him.

“You’re safe, I promise.”

“I never questioned that, not with you.”

“Then why are you trying to squeeze me to death?” Simon chuckles.

I loosen my hold on him. “I hate you.”

“Just admit it, you like feeling my body up against yours.”

We hit a bump and then another. The other bikes hot on our tail.

“Hey, Simon?”

“Yeah?” A hint of intrigue lines his tone.

“How would you feel if I let go and fell off the back of your bike? Think they’d run me over? Or maybe I’d snap my neck first? What do you think?”

Simon releases the handlebar with his left hand and pins it around my hands on his chest. “If you even fucking think about letting go.”

“Okay, okay,” I call out. “Focus on getting us the hell out of here.”

“Promise me you won’t let go.” He keeps his palm pressed on mine.

“I promise.”

He exhales and returns his attention to where it belongs—the rocky terrain ahead.

We continue to descend the uneven grassy slope, my ass growing numb from all the bumps we keep hitting until finally, we approach solid land. Simon drives us straight toward the lights of the city, coming into town from a direction I’ve never been before. We pop out onto a street and he glances back at the bikes behind us.

The guy from earlier catches up and comes to our side. “Thanks, man, that was a fucking close one!” he yells across to us. “Let me buy you a beer to thank you.” He points ahead. “I know a place up here.”

Simon lifts his visor to talk to the guy. “It’s all good, man. No sweat.”

“Ah, come on,” I tell him. “What else do we have going on?”

“Are you sure, buddy?” He motions again. “It’s just a couple blocks away.”
