I let out a sigh of relief. He might be here for blood, but I’m fairly certain it isn’t June’s. This is just a terribly unfortunate case of wrong place, wrong time. Still, I can’t let him get away with this, not when my girl is fearing for her life under a fucking table. He ruined her night, and for that, I will ruin his entire fucking existence.

I rise to my feet slowly and hold my arms up in front of me. I tuck the gun along my hand and hope he doesn’t notice it in his frantic state. “Hey, buddy.” I inch toward him.

He peels his attention from the couple for a split second to look at me. “Sit down, fucker. This is between them and me.” He shoves the gun forward like some silly threat.

"Name-calling is a bit unnecessary; don't you think?" I continue in his direction and try to get him to shift his focus to me.

He takes the bait and points the gun right at me, his hands still quivering.

“What’s this all about?” I ask him.

The guy yanks his arm toward the ceiling and fires off a warning shot. “Don’t you come any closer, you fucking hear me? I’ll shoot every person in here.”

“I don’t think you have enough ammo for that, buddy.”

“I-I—” he stutters while trying to come up with something to say.

“Cat got your tongue?” I move two inches to the right and finally get the window I’ve been searching for. I bring my arm down and pull the trigger in one swift motion, the bullet from my gun penetrating the man’s chest.

His eyes go wide and a ring of blood pools through his shirt. The arm that he was holding his own gun in lowers and his legs give out from under him.

I stalk toward him, my pistol still trained at his pathetic frame. “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” I blast another round into his temple for safe measure.

Sirens sound in the distance, and I'm reminded that I'm in a public fucking place, and I just killed a man. God damn it, this is going to take more effort to handle than usual.

Warm arms wrap around my torso and latch onto me.

I raise my elbow and hug her back. “You’re safe, love,” I reassure her.

She looks up at me, tears welling in her eyes. “I wasn’t worried about me, you fucking idiot.”

“Shh.” I hold onto her and pull her close. “Where’s Cora?” I turn where I had left them, Cora standing in my shadow.

People shuffle about, their heads peeking out from under tables to see if the coast is clear.

The woman who was targeted meets my gaze. “Th-thank you.”

I nod and while still locked onto June, I grab Cora’s hand. “Come on, both of you. We’re getting out of here.” I pull them toward the door and kick the pile of shit that’s barricading it shut. I drag them onto the sidewalk and motion to the SUV parked down the road.

The headlights flicker on immediately and the thing heads in our direction.

“Cora,” I steady the blonde and tilt her head toward me. “I’m going to take you to June’s place. Okay? You’re safe now. You don’t have anything to worry about.”

Her blue eyes blink a few times, and she nods. “Yeah. Okay.”

She’s in shock and dealing with that here isn’t the best thing for her. She needs to be somewhere completely protected from the outside world.

June wraps her hand around Cora’s and pulls her to her.

“How did you…” Cora pauses and stares at me. “How did you know to do that? Why do you have…guns?” She lowers her gaze to the one still in my hand and then to the one June is holding. “You have a gun, June.”

"I'll explain in the car, Cor." June shoves the gun in my direction and guides her friend to the blacked-out SUV.

Alec jumps out and opens the door. He helps Cora inside then June. His concerned stare meeting mine. “Is everything okay, sir?”

I lift my shirt and tuck one of the guns into my waistband and lean on Alec’s shoulder to put the other one in my ankle holster. “Yeah. We need to get out of here before the cops arrive.”
