I huffed a laugh, even more surprised as I whispered, “For what? Stealing your girl?”
Nicolas gave me a half smile, his eyes looking less hollow than I remembered. Certainly much less empty than my father’s, when I’d seen him last.
She cannot be stolen. She gives of herself, and I thank you for accepting that gift. Despite your differences.
“Of course,” I said, lowering my voice even more as Luca stirred in his sleep.
Kana and I had differences, for sure. But my mother and father had, too. And she’d always taught me that love didn’t care - that everyone was different, anyway, and love wove two threads together even if they were different colors or textures.
She needs you. Your blood. Share your blood, King...
I waited, frowning at the weird abbreviation of my last name. It was almost as if... no. That was ridiculous.
Opening up my mind a little, I tried to push the words into his mind instead of speaking, just in case Luca or Blaise were listening. I’d never been strong with that skill, but we were only a few feet apart.
What have you seen in the mist? What can you tell me?
Nicolas flickered a bit, like he was losing strength. Like the stronger he came into being, the faster he fizzled out.
Then I heard the words echo in my mind,You are part of her salvation. Her weapon, but more than that, too. Share your blood with her - give her what I cannot. Pure...
And he began to fade quickly, like smoke blown away on the night breeze.
Pure?
Nicolas had been a pureblood vampire, as far as I knew. Luca most definitely was not, and neither was her blood slaveaima. So was that a piece of this puzzle? Kana needed pure blood from me, her weapon.
I’d follow orders, of course, but my mind was struggling to come up with a reason why this could be important.
Not to mention, it was both a mindfuck and a hit to my pride to think that I was taking Nicolas’s place. He was passing the pureblood torch, and I suddenly felt more like a pawn in the game than ever before.
The biggest question, though, was whose game was it?
