Trailing my fingers through the lingering mist, I strapped on my weapons again. I was tired and still uncertain about so many things, but suddenly I just didn’t want to spend another minute away from my men.

Taking stock of where I was, I hurried back to the path that would take me to Kas and Luca.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

KANA

I hadn’t gone far when I’d chased away the gobbelins, so making my way back to the cave was quick.

What I hadn’t expected, though, was to find it empty.

Kas? Where are you guys?I called through the mindspeak, searching for his mind in the labyrinth.

The dead-end corridor still held the remains of the two gobbelins I’d killed, garish in the morning light. The bodies looked worse, actually, like something had been gnawing on the ragged flesh.

I’d been told gobbelin blood was poisonous, but I didn’t see any dead animals around, so maybe that was just another rumor. Again, I wished I’d had more teaching on the Gobbelin Wars and what they were like, but it was such ancient history that the real details had been mixed with exaggeration and myth.

I began to head away from the cave, still calling my thief’s name with my ice magic.

Finally, he responded, and he was pissed. What the fuck, K? Where did you go? We had to leave - an oso found the cave and took a few good swipes at Luca.

Is he okay?I rushed out, worry washing over me. Surely, I hadn’t led the gobbelins away only to leave them exposed to other threats.

He’ll be fine. We both gave him some blood, and Blaise had some medicine in her pack. I swear, if I didn’t know better, I’d say she knew about the labyrinth before we were sent here.

His voice was wry, but there was an undertone of respect for his teammate, and I was glad they had her.

But why the fuck did you leave?he asked again, anger lacing the words.

Tell me where you are... I’m sorry I left. It was... it was a weak moment,I added, guilt lodging in my throat.

Dropping the argument with a sigh, Kas began to describe the area they’d reached, sending me a mental image of their hand-drawn map. He begged me to hurry, and I picked up my pace, keeping careful watch for animals while I rushed to find them.

But I’d only turned two corners when my stomach began to burn and itch with my own personal alarm system.

Fucking hell, not again.
