And really, that made sense. If the Ancient Magic could be contained in a single simple book, Merden would have killed me all those years ago and found the book herself.

I still had to win the Trials to awaken all of the Ancient Magic inside me, and probably only then would all of the spells be revealed.

The mist had granted me a boon, but my quest wasn’t complete yet.

And for now, I had a different kind of work to do. Tucking the book back against my stomach, I squirmed at the even odder feeling of it sinking beneath my skin - still painless, but definitely not a sensation I enjoyed.

Staying vigilant me for possible threats, I strode out of the clearing and back into the maze of Prophecy.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

KANA

Now that I’d seen the stag, I was on the lookout for other possible stories that could be considered a prophecy.

There were plenty of riddle-makers in vampire history, and lots of old stories about certain symbolism tied to creatures or plants.

I tried calling out to Kassian every few minutes, but either we were too far apart, or the enhancement of the black ice lotus had been lost - when the mist had spit me back out, I’d been unfortunately missing that too.

I hadn’t seen Nicolas or the mist again, either, and the threat of being completely alone was starting to sink in with the setting sun.

I didn’t need to rest yet, but I was wary of spending too much energy in case the gobbelins were hunting me now - or anything else from this section. Until I knew what odd things might come out in the dark here, it might be best to find a safe place to shelter for the night.

Even though I hadn’t had a good alternative option, I was beginning to regret coming into the Prophecy section, as it meant I was most likely diagonal from the Fauna section, and possibly left with no direct route to my men.

I didn’t have paper or ink to record a map, so I’d been careful to carve the layout of my wanderings into my memory as best as I could. The labyrinth was unnervingly quiet here, and my senses felt raw as I stretched them in every direction, trying to figure out the true threat.

There was no way Merden had made an entire section full of wish granters. Nineve had been terrified enough of whatever was chasing her to run into an unproven section blind. Something was out here.

The day dragged on as I chose mostly right turns that kept me headed generally toward the center of the labyrinth.

I was hoping that I’d find a way into the Fauna section, but I was beginning to doubt the strategy as I still had no luck reaching Kas through my mindspeak.

In the back of my mind, there was a growing fear that maybe he’d been killed by something, too.

Just as the sun was disappearing over the labyrinth walls, I came upon a clearing that was similar to where I’d found the stag, except there was no pool of clear water here. And no stag.
