“Going home is nice, Jilly,” I said, ducking effortlessly as she launched herself at me, her jaw unhinged and her fangs flashing toward my throat.

I was a warrior, and I knew how to avoid her.

Scrambling to her feet, she threw herself at me again, but I met her with a calm hand in the air. A block of wind and ice sent her sprawling backward, shaking her head like an animal who had attacked itself in a mirror.

“Kana? Are you... okay?”

I turned toward the voice, seeing Kassian there. I nodded, although I felt prompted to remind him. “I’m also Khione.”

He swallowed hard and nodded, looking warily into my eyes before holding out his hand and leading me away from the throne.

I enjoyed our slow walking, my boots thudding through the empty corridors, and icy fog trailing after me like a cloak as we left the banquet room behind.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

KASSIAN

I had no idea what to do.

I led Kana into her rooms, Luca trailing after me with the same confusion on his face that I was feeling.

The two of us settled on her bed, looking at her as she stood calmly, muscles loose as she surveyed the room like she’d never even been here. She looked back at me, simply waiting.

For what, I had no idea.

Watching me with those strange new eyes... icy blue had replaced the familiar black.

What the hell had happened to her in the mist?

“Do you... do you want to change?” Luca asked her, gesturing toward her closet. She tilted her head before nodding and walking into the closet, stripping off the ragged leathers and tunic she’d worn in the labyrinth as she moved.

“What the hell is going on?” I hissed at Luca as soon as she’d disappeared into the closet.

“No fucking clue,” he grumbled, shrugging.

“Tell me what I missed,” I snapped back. I had gaps in my memory, and he was being difficult.
