“That’s enough!” She yanked him away from me, causing milk to dribble out of the side of his mouth. He cried, his wails making my heart hurt so much I was sure it was going to break inside of me.

“He hasn’t finished,” I told her. “He needs more.”

She pointed the knife at me, her warning loud and clear. “He’s had enough.” She pulled him to her chest, cooing down at him, her personality changing like the flick of a switch. “You’re ready now, baby boy.” She ran her fingertip up his cheek and over his hair. “They’re going to love you so much.”

“Who will love him?” I asked, my neck aching at the angle I was at. My back was to the floor, my body still strapped to the chair. Dizziness was taking me over, but I was determined to stay alert while Dario was here.

“His new mom and dad.” She rolled her eyes at me like it was a stupid question.

“No.” I shook my head, making my stomach churn, but I didn’t care. I had to get to him. My strength was dissipating the longer I was here. I had no idea how much time had passed since the doctor’s office.

“Yes,” she countered, smiling down at me. “Don’t worry though, you’re getting a new family too.”

“Wh-what?”

She nodded, a smug expression plastered over her face. “Yep. You’re going to the highest bidder.”

“The highest bidder?” I frowned, confused by what she was saying. “What are you talking about.”

She huffed out a breath, her frustration clear. “Do I have to spell it out for you?” I stayed silent, because yes, she did. I had no idea what this was—who she was. “Dario is being adopted by a lovely family who is paying a lot of money for him.” She blew raspberries at him.

My nostrils flared, my heart thumping in my chest faster than it ever had before. “You’re selling my baby?”

“And you.” She stepped back, stowing the knife away. “But you’ll have a job to do when you meet your new family.”

“A job?” I was repeating her, but the longer I had her talking, the more I could disarm her. Although, at this stage it felt futile, but what else was I supposed to do?

“Yep.” She took one last look at me. “To spread your legs and let him fuck you any way he wants to.” My breath caught in my throat at understanding what she was saying.

“No,” I whispered, but it didn’t matter because she was already halfway out of the door, my son in her arms, shattering my entire world with a single lock of a door.

Everything was over.

My life would never be the same.

I’dnever be the same.

I closed my eyes, resigning to the fate that Miriam had given me, wishing I could see Dante just one last time. To tell him I love him. To tell him that it didn’t matter what was going on around us; all that mattered was me, him, and Dario.

I whispered, “I love you,” hoping that somehow my words would make their way to him. That he’d know deep down there was only ever him—only him who lit up my entire world.

We were over, but deep down inside, our souls would never be separated. I’d feel him always. I’d never let him go. No matter what I had to endure, the memories would be carved deep into my soul, refusing to be washed away.

CHAPTER 17

DANTE

The room wasn’t silent for a single second as Remy was on one line and Agent Peters’s contact was on another. Lorenzo was still trying to contact Mr. Blue, but his line was dead, leaving us with no way to reach him. I couldn’t help thinking that if it wasn’t for Remy, I wouldn’t have a clue what had happened or who had gotten Navy and Dario.

“Why?” I asked suddenly. “Why has she taken them?”

Agent Peters looked up from where he was sitting on the edge of the sofa, his laptop open on his lap. “I…” He tilted his head back, staring up at the ceiling. “It’s confidential.”

I spluttered, a brash laugh escaping my throat. “Confidential?” Raising a brow, I stepped toward him. “There ain’t nothing that’s confidential when it comes to Navy and my son, you get that,Agent?”

His nostrils flared, a muscle ticcing in his jaw. “You forget who you’re talking to, boy.”

“And you”—I pointed at him—“forget that you’re surrounded in your own house by four men who could put a bullet in your brain within the blink of an eye.” I took another step toward him. “So you can fuck off with your ‘confidential’ bullshit, and tell me why the fuck she’s taken them.”
