She snorted. “No. Do you think that makes me sound desperate if I say yes?”

“Do you think he is desperate because he asked you right away?” Whitney asked.

“No.”

“Then there is your answer.”

“Okay. I’m going to tell him yes.”

That sounds great. Still at my sister-in-law’s. Let me know what works for you. I’ll be leaving soon.

She showed it to Whitney who nodded and she hit send.

The text popped up fast.Text me when you get home and we’ll figure it out.“That’s easy enough,” she said, showing it to Whitney.

She sent a thumbs up back and then wondered if that was silly on her end, but it was too late to take it back.

“Now go home and get ready,” Whitney said. “But you have to let me know how it goes.”

“I will,” she said, starting to clean up lunch.

“Leave it,” Whitney said. “I’ve got it. I’m so excited for you. A hot man and a puppy. And not that far from here. Maybe we can double date.”

“Now you’re being cute,” she said. But it did lighten the mood. “I’m nervous. Why am I nervous? I never get nervous to go on a first date. I think I’ve just decided they mostly suck and show up.”

“This tells you that it’s not going to suck,” Whitney said. “Nerves are a good thing. Go with it. It’s anticipation. Fill me in later. Dress sexy too. Even if it’s jeans. Put your best pair on. Fitted shirt. Heels. Definitely heels with the jeans.”

“Wow,” she said, shaking her head. “Thanks, Mom.”

“Sorry,” Whitney said. “I’m excited for you.”

“I’m excited for me too and I need to cool it down. It’s one date. The guy could be a total loser. I mean, he’s older than me and single. I’ve been down that road with a man not wanting to commit.”

“First off,” Whitney said, “don’t judge everyone on Mike. Rick could have been married and you don’t know. He’s new here. There are a lot of things you don’t know. Trey had never been married either. He wasn’t afraid of commitment. You either. He could have the same story as you.”

“You’re right. I’m looking for things to go wrong.”

“Don’t. For once look for things to go right.”

A Good Sign

When Rick decided to ask Gillian to dinner sometime the last thing he expected was that it’d be today. But she’d texted him first and it hadn’t even been an hour since he’d seen her so he took that as a good sign and threw it out there.

After going back and forth a few times with her when she got home, they decided to have dinner at his house and she’d cook with him. This could be interesting in more ways than one.

First, he had no idea if he had enough food in his house to cook but didn’t want to admit that. Nor did he want her to bring the food. In the end, he’d told her to show up and they’d figure it out together. The store wasn’t that far, they could go together if they needed to.

Second, his house was still pretty empty and he wondered how it’d look from a woman’s eyes.

Then he had to tell himself it shouldn’t matter. She knew he hadn’t lived here long.

The good part was he didn’t have to clean much because he was a neat person to begin with and now he wouldn’t have to worry about leaving his puppy. Which had been weighing on his mind and he was glad that Gillian brought it up.

Putting George in his crate for thirty minutes to run to the store wasn’t the end of the world, but he wasn’t ready to do it for a few hours while he went on a date.

“Are you going to behave when Gillian gets here?” he asked George. The puppy was playing with a ball and kicking it and chasing it around the room.
