“I think it’s a den or something. I’m not sure what to do with it.” He walked over and opened it. “I guess it could be a spare bedroom or a playroom for kids in the future, but I don’t have a full bath down here. Just a half by the stairs. Being off the living room, I’m not sure it’d be all that quiet either.”

“It can be George’s room,” she said.

“That’s a good idea,” he said. “I’ve been blocking the hallway off to get back here so he can stay in this open space. I figured when I go to work here in my office on Monday I’ll keep him in there with me.”

“Which I’m sure he’ll love.”

“I do like the idea of keeping George’s crate and toys in that room though. Maybe it won’t bother me as much or him if he’s in there when I leave. I’ll get him a TV too. If that is on, he might think I’m home.”

She started to laugh. “That is very cute and considerate. I’ve heard of other people who keep their TV on for the dog so they think someone is home.”

“I’m glad you think it’s a good idea and I’m not some fool.”

“Hardly that,” she said. “How many bedrooms do you have upstairs? This is such a large space down here and it looks to be the same size upstairs.”

“Four bedrooms, two full baths. It’s fifteen hundred square feet on both floors. I’ve only got furniture in my room. I should get something in at least one other room too, but it’s not like I get a lot of guests.”

“You’ll fill it when you’re ready,” she said. “Some people need time. Did you make any changes when you moved in?”

“No,” he said. “I liked the way it was. Even the paint colors. I’m not fussy and they kept everything gray. I’m not a huge fan of the white kitchen, but I’m not messy either. There is no way I’m replacing it because it’s not my choice.”

He had the money, that wasn’t the issue, but it wasn’t practical either when it was a kitchen most would die for. White cabinets and counters just weren’t his thing, but not enough for him to live through construction.

“I can appreciate that. It might grow on you, but if you don’t use it much, it won’t matter then.”

“That is what I thought. Though I’m trying,” he said.

She grinned at him. “That’s what we’re going to do tonight. I thought maybe I could show you a few tricks to help with your dietary journey.”

He snorted. “It’s a journey, but I’m determined. My blood pressure hasn’t gone up so that is good. I wasn’t sure once I decided to get George.”

“Are you monitoring it yourself?”

“I am. They weren’t really worried about it too much. Don’t think poorly of me, but I haven’t been to the doctors in years. I only went now because my mother was on my case to get a primary here. I got sick of hearing about it. I didn’t expect to find out about my cholesterol and blood pressure. I’ve felt fine for the most part.”

“Then you’ll feel even better once it’s under control. Good nutrition will make you feel good too.”

“I’m sure you’re a perfectionist when it comes to food,” he asked.

“Hardly that,” she said, grinning. The smile reached her eyes, a twinkle almost and she looked like the girl next door with some mischief mixed in. “I had a sandwich and pasta salad for lunch. I eat sandwich meat too.”

“Turkey with mustard?” he asked.

“Matter of fact it was. The pasta salad had a lot of vegetables in it.”

“Why would you ruin a good pasta salad with vegetables?” he asked, feigning a horrified face.

“You’re pretty funny,” she said. “But I think I need to show you healthy eating can taste good too. If you don’t think I’m too nerdy.”

“You’re not looking anything like nerdy to me right now,” he said.

“Neither are you. Especially since you sit behind a computer all day.”

He laughed. “You’re pretty funny yourself. Why don’t we figure out our dinner? I don’t have a lot here, so you tell me what you think would be good for me and what we need and we can go get it together.”

“That sounds like a logical plan.”

“I get the feeling we are both logical in our own right.”
