It was on the tip of his tongue to say the best ever but instead said, “Great. How about yours?”

“It’s always nice to visit with family and then send them on their way. And I’m sure you’re dying to know the rest of your blood work?”

“I am,” he said. “I’ve overhauled my diet for the past three months.”

“I can tell,” Dr. Mason said. “And you lost four pounds. Are you trying to lose weight?”

“No,” he said, frowning. “I didn’t even notice it.”

“You wouldn’t with your height. You’re at a good healthy weight and I just wanted to double-check. I don’t want you going overboard with making changes and affecting other things.”

“I don’t think I am,” he said. “But you’ll tell me, I’m sure.”

Dr. Mason grinned. “You’re blood pressure is nice and strong. Good numbers, but if you are taking it yourself daily, you’d know that. Plus you saw it here.”

“I did,” he said. “I didn’t think that was much of an issue before. Some of it might have been stress related with my job and moving. Starting a new job. I’m settled in nicely and my biggest stress is how much snow is going to fall that I’ve got to shovel off my deck and for my dog.”

Dr. Mason laughed. “If that is the biggest stress you’ve got then you’re doing well. Your cholesterol is down twenty percent. In three months’ time that is fabulous.”

“Wow,” he said, trying to do the math in his head fast. “That is over sixty points.”

“It is. Keep up the good work. You’re still high, but in another three months you could be in a normal range. If not, then we’ll have to talk about medication.”

“I’ll get it down,” he said.

“Did you see the dietician or are you doing this on your own?” Dr. Mason asked.

“I saw Gillian Bridges,” he said, holding back his grin. “She was wonderful. She got through to me on what I needed to do. What to eat and what not to and not to push myself or be so strict that I give up.”

“Good,” Dr. Mason said. “That’s what I want to hear. I’m all for people trying to fix medical issues without medication, but statistically speaking, most take the easy way and pop a pill rather than making drastic changes. Diet changes are drastic to many.”

“They are,” he said. “But not horrible. I’m used to it now. I feel better. I’m sleeping better and have more energy.”

“Perfect,” he said. “Just like a poster child for everything to do right. Keep up the good work. Make another appointment for three months from now and if things are still trending down and there are no other issues you’ve got, I can see you in a year.”

“Sounds great,” he said, standing up and shaking the doctor’s hand. Overall, it was an easy appointment.

He pulled his phone out when he got in the hall and texted Gillian to see if she could talk for a minute. She was in the same building but a different floor and he didn’t know how busy she’d be, but she knew his appointment was today. He wanted to share the good news.

She replied back she had ten minutes before her next appointment showed up and she’d meet him upstairs in the hallway there.

He went to the stairs and up to the third floor. No reason to take the elevator. He never did before.

“Hey,” she said when he got there. “How did it go?”

“Great,” he said. “I’m down over sixty points. The doctor seemed impressed. Told me everything is great and to keep up the good work. He asked if I was doing it on my own or saw the dietician.”

She grinned. “And what did you say?”

“I told him I saw you and sang your praises at how great you are at your job.”

She poked him in the belly. “Thank you for that, but this is all you. You had one appointment and you followed orders.”

“Come on now,” he said. “I did and I would have but not as well if I didn’t have you in my life.”

He couldn’t explain how thrilled he was that she’d said she loved him back on Christmas. For him, he couldn’t keep it in any longer and had to get the words out of his mouth.

He’d thought she felt the same way but hadn’t been positive. To hear them voiced was like a weight lifted off his shoulders that he hadn’t known had been there.
