“It is,” Nick said. “We wanted to talk to you because we know some of your background. You told us that in the interview. Caleb knows a thing or two about selling a tech company and the amount of work it takes to build it.”

Which he knew of Caleb, but it’s not like he and Dean had a company. They had patents and they had code that was worth a lot. They never got to really build their company past the two of them and a few other developers that came and went, but nothing long term.

“I’m aware,” he said. “It’s as I said, it ate up a lot of my time and I continued on with the job I had too.”

“I think it’s commendable that you stuck it out with your friend,” Zach said. “True friendship is hard to find.”

Caleb rolled his eyes at Zach and shook his head. “What I can tell you is that I get sucked into the work and barely come up for air. Nick wants me to tell you not to do it. I don’t anymore. Not here. My wife wouldn’t let me either. It’s not what is expected of the employees. They can tell you that, but they wanted someone else to tell you that was more on your level.”

As far as he knew, Caleb didn’t manage anyone as much as he managed the data for specific projects only. Talk about someone that could be pulled into a job.

“Thanks,” he said. “It’s nice to know I’m not just another body producing the product.”

“Not here,” Nick said. “We’ve all got families to go home to. Caleb is in Lake Placid full time. His wife owns a B&B, but Zach and I do split our time between here and Richmond. With the world now, a lot of work can get done without being in the office.”

“But my position does need to be there,” Zach said. “I’ve got a good team under me though.”

“My father is there full time in Richmond handling a lot of things,” Nick said. “My wife is a writer and can work anywhere. She travels with me when I go back.”

“I don’t have that luxury,” Zach said. “Amber loves her job and can’t leave as often, but we work it out. So yeah, we fill the team with good people that share our values and want to stay. That means don’t get burned out.”

He wasn’t sure he’d ever heard of a company this laid back before, but they were extremely successful and had very little turnover so they had to be doing something right.

“I appreciate you telling me this.”

“If you don’t have anything else you want to talk to us about,” Nick said, “we’ll let you get on the road.”

“I think I’m good. I’ll be ready for our meeting on Tuesday with the team and I’ve got a lot of good ideas after yesterday.”

Nick slapped him on the back. “That’s what we like to hear. But go home and enjoy your weekend. Hopefully you’ve got someone waiting for you there. If not, then just relax.”

He hadn’t said much about his personal life and they hadn’t asked. “My girlfriend, Gillian,” he said. “She’s puppy-sitting for me right now.”

“Oh God,” Zach said. “You and Caleb can bond over your dogs. Let me guess, it’s a rescue?”

“It is,” he said. “A boxer named George.”

“I’ve got a shepherd named Sparky. Scared the living shit out of Zach. Good dog.”

These three guys were a riot to be around. Though Caleb didn’t say much and you could tell he’d rather be anywhere than here, he got along just fine with the guy.

“I might have to bring Gillian for a visit and stay at your wife’s B&B.”

“My wife spoils her guests. She’s a great cook,” Caleb said.

“Which is how she won him over,” Zach said. “He’s getting a little soft now.”

“Asshole,” Caleb said.

“Boys,” Nick said. “This is what I spend my time doing when we are all together.”

“Then I’ll let you get back to your families and head home to mine,” he said.

Twenty minutes later he was in his car and on the road. He’d never thought he’d have a family and yet here he did.

He looked at the clock and would be home by six. Hopefully traffic worked in his favor because he was missing his girl and his dog.

Five minutes before six, he pulled into his driveway, hit the button on his garage door and parked his SUV after driving by Gillian’s in the driveway. She had a key to his house, but he never gave her the garage door opener.
