“You need to figure that out, but from what I just saw and what you’ve told me, I can pretty much figure out what happened between the two of you.”

She stopped and crossed her arms. “What’s that?”

“He fell out of love with you and didn’t want to hurt you, Gillian. And he didn’t have the balls to tell you. I could see it when he was looking at you. You were too busy looking at Brandy. There was sympathy in his eyes and concern, but not love, not anger, not vindictiveness. There was cowardice that he couldn’t tell you what was going on and was hoping someone else did it for him. Like you ending the relationship and not him.”

“What about me is unlovable?” she asked.

He snorted. “Did you love him when you left?”

“What?” she asked.

“You heard me. When you left. When you decided to leave, did you love him?”

“No,” she said.

“Was he the same person you’ve always known?”

“No,” she said. “He changed. He didn’t seem to care as much about things. He avoided talking about the future. He never talked about things he was uncomfortable with. He didn’t like to make waves; he just pushed them off.”

“That part sounds the same. Seems to me you both held on because neither of you was willing to take that step. You took it and he was probably relieved. Maybe he was giving you closure just now and doing it the only way he knew how.”

“By rubbing my face in the fact he put a ring on someone else’s finger?” she yelled.

He shook his head. “There is no talking to you. You won’t or can’t see it and I can’t help you.”

She walked to the front door and got her keys and jacket. “You’re probably right.”

She slammed out the door and it was just another man that let her go.

She was going to go home and cry but found her car turning down the road Trey lived on and past his house. The garage door was open and Trey’s truck wasn’t there. Whitney was who she needed so she pulled in and hoped her sister-in-law was home.

She knocked on the front door, Whitney answering. “Hey, Gillian. What’s wrong? You’re crying.”

“Are you alone?”

“Yes. Trey is working. Ben is sleeping.”

“Oh, the garage door is open and I thought maybe he just ran out.”

“Crap,” she said. “Nope, I must have forgotten to shut it when I went to get the mail. Come in. Tell me what is going on. My guess is it has to do with Rick?”

“It does,” she said. “I just messed up. I should have figured I’d do that.”

“I doubt you did. Do you want some coffee?”

“That would be good,” she said. “You shouldn’t be drinking it.”

“Decaf for me. No worries. Baby Bridges is in good shape. I don’t need her kicking me all night long from the caffeine hit.”

“No name yet?” she asked.

“Nope. Can’t decide and you’re evading. Tell me what happened. I thought things were going so well with you two.”

“They were. We were at the mall and I saw Mike.”

“Oh,” she said. “Okay, then what?”

She told Whitney what happened.
