“I think I just found my new favorite restaurant.”

He laughed. “Sounds about right. If you give me your number, I’ll text you the address.”

I shot him a dry look. “Subtle isn’t your strong suit, is it?”

His grin was wicked. “Not really, no. But it worked, didn’t it?”

It was a little cruel. If I didn’t give in, I risked not getting the address to where I could get more amazing sandwiches. But I didn’t want to encourage him either. I almost pouted when I shook my head.

“No, I don’t think so. Let’s just keep it professional.”

He tipped his head. “I don’t think it’s unprofessional to have your private security’s phone number. What if you need me for something and I’m not around?”

I raised an eyebrow. “I thought you were supposed to stay with me at all times?”

Chuckling, he shrugged. “Didn’t hear you complaining after I brought back lunch. Liam is strict but not completely out of touch that he thinks we’ll be attached at the hip. I can’t be on top of you all the time.”

ChapterNine

It wasn’t meantto be suggestive but the image flashed through my head all the same. Him on top of me, sweaty and naked, that wild grin on his face as he fucked me. His gaze locked with mine and I choked on my next bite, pounding on my chest to try and clear my airway.

Jumping out of his seat, he handed me a bottle of water, patting my back. I waved him away, taking small sips until I could breathe right. Where the hell was my mind at? I was not getting myself involved with Jaime, especially now that we were forced to work together.

“You alright?”

I nodded. “Yes, I’m fine. Thank you. Uh, for the water. And the lunch. How much do I owe you?”

Shaking his head, he loped back to his seat, getting comfortable. “Lunch is provided by my cousin. Luckily not his wife because she can’t cook.”

Frowning, I glanced down at the sandwich and back up. “You’re related to the sandwich shop owner?”

He frowned. “No. I wish. That’d be a convenient way to get free food. I was referring to Liam.”

My eyebrows flew up. “You’re related to Mr. O’Connor?”

I mean sure, a lot of mafia families all worked together so it wasn’t a stretch to think that Jaime might be related but it honestly never occurred to me. They looked nothing alike. Liam was all dark hair and blue eyes and power seemed to radiate from him. Jaime was bright and sunshiny with blonde hair and green eyes. They couldn’t be more opposite if they tried.

“You look nothing alike!”

He lifted a shoulder carelessly. “I know. I look like my mom. Liam is my uncle’s carbon copy. If you put pictures of them next to each other at the same age, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.”

Huffing out a laugh, I shook my head. “I didn’t see that coming.” A thought crossed my mind. “Wait, when you said you got reassigned because you pissed off your cousin–”

He nodded, a slow grin crossing his face. “Yeah, Liam doesn’t really like me right now.”

My mouth fell open. “How are you still alive?!”

He barked out a laugh. “Beats me. But seriously, he’s not that bad. A little rough around the edges but he gives a shit about his employees and he’d go to hell and back for his family. I may not be his favorite person but I doubt he’d do anything permanent.”

Shock rolled through me, followed swiftly by jealousy. I’ve always hated the life I was born into. My father cares more about money being brought in than the people working for him. My brother was shot once and my father never even called a doctor. I had to threaten to call an ambulance to get him to react. And it always felt like he saw me and my sister as items instead of actual people. Yet here I find out that another mafia family who lives just across the city was living the life I’d always hoped for. Women were seen as equals, people cared more about their family and the lives of the people working for them, there was never any fear that you’d be hurt or even killed if you didn’t follow orders.

“Bex? Rebecca!”

I jumped, glancing around. Jaime was leaning against my desk, watching me as I dove headfirst into the turmoil my family seemed to always cause me. Sadness, regret, anger, jealousy, it all slammed into me at once. My hands trembled and I didn’t react when he reached out to touch my face.

“Breathe. You’re okay. Just relax.”

I was hit with another wave of jealousy. No one in my family would pay any attention when I would get upset. They’d tell me to suck it up and get out of the way. I was so angry I wanted to throw things and scream but I knew it’d be useless. There was nothing I could do but keep working in hopes of changing my future to something better.
