ChapterSeven

Apparently,Yuri’s magic was hacking. Really really good hacking. I’ve never seen anyone code that fast. Luckily, I had brought my laptop with me, hoping to work on a project when I came back to my room since my friends weren’t staying the night with me. After handing it to him, he immediately sat down and started hacking at the speed of sound. It was a nice distraction from the mind numbing anxiety of what was happening to me right now.

Gabi sat next to me on the bed, holding my hand. She was an unwavering source of support and I found myself leaning my head on her shoulder. Jo was listless, constantly pacing and peeking out the window like she expected Kyle to show up and attack us at any minute.

“Jo, stop pacing and call O’Connor. He’s going to want to know what’s going on,” Yuri snapped. Every time she walked past him it seemed to annoy him. She paused, frowning at him.

“Why would he need to know?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because his wife is currently playing bodyguard while her team is out hunting a pervert.”

She rolled her eyes. “Nobody is playing shit.”

He turned, giving her an exasperated look. She stuck her tongue out at him.

“Either you can call him or I will. Which will it be?”

Jo scowled, throwing her hands into the air in defeat. “Fine! I’ll let Liam know.” Grumbling, she went into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

“How come you never told me you could hack?” Gabi didn’t move but it was obvious who she was talking to.

“You didn’t ask.”

“Yuri!”

He snickered. “You know Dmitriy prefers you remain as out of the loop as he can keep you. Besides, now that I work solely with you, I don’t do it often anymore.”

For someone who didn’t hack often, his fingers never stopped moving, even while he was talking to Gabi. I stopped bothering trying to follow along after a while.

“Well, now I feel bad. Like I’m holding you back.”

He paused, looking over his shoulder at her. “Gabi, you’re my friend. And you constantly have my back, even against your own husband. Why would I give up protecting you to spend all day in front of a computer?”

I couldn’t see her face but I felt her relax. They were good friends and I was a little jealous. Which felt cruel. I have friends, we just aren’t as close as we used to be.

It didn’t take long before there was a knock at the door. Jo left the bathroom, intent on answering it but Yuri gave her a dirty look, racing to stop her.

“You know your husband would kill me too if you got hurt. He doesn’t care that I don’t work for him.”

Jo turned, walking over to sit next to Gabi, effectively ignoring him. “I thought you said he was fun.”

Gabi snickered. “He is fun. You just like to make trouble.”

Yuri glanced out the peephole before jerking the door open. Jaime came in first, followed by James who threw Kyle at my feet.

“Gabi,” Yuri warned. I felt her nod before tugging on my hands.

“Let’s go sit on the other bed, okay?”

I let her lead me away from Kyle who was scrambling to try and get back on his feet. “What the fuck, man? What is this shit?” He glanced around and his eyes landed on me. I saw fury blast across his face before he hid it with a mask of indifference.

“Hello, Lizzy. Wasn’t expecting to see you until later.”

James was on him instantly, throwing him up against a wall and holding him with an arm against his throat, so high that Kyle had to stay on his tiptoes to be able to breathe right.

“Don’t fucking talk to her.”

Kyle’s hands went up in surrender. “Alright, alright. I get it,” he choked.
