An unwrapped protein bar appears in my free hand.

I nod. “Useful.” It comes out as a grunt, and I shove as many calories in my mouth before the next wave starts.

Rook smiles down at me.

“Well, that wasn’t too bad, was it?” he says with a grin that tells me he doesn’t know there’s more to come.

I can only shake my head as I crunch on the protein bar and wait it out. He’ll figure it out soon enough.

I’m coming, mate. I’m almost to you. Hold tight,Drago speaks to my mind, and a rush of adrenaline pours into me from him.

Thank you. I’m about to enter the second leg of this hell storm.

Rebound?Drago asks, like everyone already knew that was a fucking thing except me.

Yeah. Please hurry.

I’ll do my utmost to take care of you, mate.

The connection ends, and I’m squarely in my sore, fevered body once more instead of halfway in Drago’s mind.

I gulp down the rest of the water, jam more protein bar in my mouth, and reach out to Rafe, actively pushing away the thought that he’d already be here if he wanted to be.

My other mates were here. Drago knew somehow, and he’s on his way from the Kootenays. Rook somehow deleted his trauma to get me through this.

And yet Rafe isn’t here.

I’m in a rebound heat. I need you.

That’s all I say.

If he wants to be here, then he will be.

RAFE

Huh.I’m surprised the ward let you in here.

I’ll let you listen in, but that’s it. This is hard enough.

“Mr. Navarro, it’s nice to meet you.”

The alpha gestures to the armchair behind me and seats himself behind his faux wood desk.

Looks like cheap laminate.

Probably still expensive.

“So, tell me, what brings you in today?”

I pull at the collar of my Henley. It’s too damned hot in here. The room is too small. The fluorescent tube lighting overhead is too damn loud.

The alpha clears his throat. “Mr. Navarro, are you alright? You seem uncomfortable.”

Yeah, no shit. Don’t need a psychology degree to figure that one out. Except the plaques on the wall behind him tell the story of just how many psychology degrees this man has.

But I stay silent.

For twenty minutes, the alpha and I say nothing to each other. It’s awkward but less than actually talking about it.
