“Thank you, I would.”

“I’ll tag along.” Jonah hops off the log we were all sitting on, extinguishes the fire with the buckets of water we hauled out for just that purpose, and trots after them.

“Why are they being so weird?” I ask Rook.

He smiles down at me. “Because they aren’t so caught up in their own heads and can read the subtext behind my question.”

“Subtext? I didn’t—oh.”

Rook’s devilish grin is all the clue I need. We hurry inside to turn the subtext into fucktext.

Yeah, it’s not a word. I don’t care.

“Are you sure about this?”He asks as he unzips my coat.

I nod. “Yes, with an asterisk.”

Rook pauses, eyeing me. His hands fall to his side. “What’s the asterisk?”

I lower my gaze, suddenly uncomfortable.

“Hey, hey, don’t do that. Don’t drop your eyes like that. Just tell me,” Rook says as he presses a finger under my chin.

I allow him to lift my chin and meet his gaze once more. “I’m just concerned that…” I let the thought trail off. Our first time had been a disaster, and our second only happened because I was in heat. “I’m just worried that you’re not ready, and you’re only doing this because you think it’ll help me.”

Rook rolls his eyes. “Well, that’s pretty self-centered of you and doesn’t consider the fact that I’m a whole-ass person with a brain who can noodle these sorts of things out for myself.”

I gawk at him. If anyone else had said it, even sweet Jonah, I probably would have gotten my feelings hurt.

But Rook was so matter of fact about it. There wasn’t any judgment in his words. He was simply stating that he had made a choice, and all I needed to do was respect it.

“Yeah, I guess you have a point.”

“I appreciate your concern for my well being, but trust me when I say, I know where my limits are. OK?”

I nod, and Rook continues unzipping my coat.

He pushes it off my shoulders, and I let it fall to the bedroom floor. “There’s a lot of heavy shit swirling around us right now, and my goal is to get your head off that. At least for a little while.”

The fire had done a great job of that, but there’s always room for mind-erasing orgasms, right? So, I reach for him but end up stopping just before touching him.

I didn’t want to fuck this up again.

Rook reads my hesitation, and a delightful smirk crosses his face. “I have an idea.” He crosses the room, grabs my robe, and takes the tie out of the loops. “Gimme your wrists,” he says with a devious grin, and I all too happily oblige. Rook figure-eights the tie around my wrists a few times before tying the ends in a knot.

“There. That oughta calm both our nerves.”

And, I mean, he wasn’t wrong.

ROOK

Oh,I see how it is. You like a male perspective on the sexy stuff. I get it. Dirty, dirty bird. Well, strap in, I guess, because I have no intentions of holding back.

Willa’s staring at me with those big, haunted hazel eyes, and my only goal is getting her to come so hard and so many times that the darkness leaves her gaze.

I have a choice: easy or hard.

I can use magic to chuck her on the bed and remove her clothes, or I can do it the hard way, with my hands.
