Despite the magical roofie, all the yelling rouses Rafe. I feel his mind become alert in our bond.

“Ohhh, that’s new. What just happened there?” Lily asks, scrutinizing my left shoulder.

“Uh, I felt Rafe wake up. It’s new for me too. When he first claimed me, he was just a voice in my head. Now, there’s more. There’s more of a defined presence. Almost like with each new claiming bond, I can access a bigger chunk of their awareness.”

Jonah was the most recent mate to claim me and slipping into his mind is like taking a calming tincture. That’s how strongly I feel his mental state when we’re connected. He and I were never simply voices in the other’s heads.

Lily smiles. “I see it. That’s the bond! I get it now! All the loops and whorls are your different mate bonds winding through your magic. It’s like a highway system in there. Quite confusing without context, but now…” She points a finger at me and traces it in the air as if she’s following one such whorl. “Can you talk to him or do something to light up the bond again?”

I nod and whisper into Rafe’s mind.Good morning, sleepy head.

Mmm… good morning, Omega. Where are you?

The living room with Sunny, Eden, Emilia, and a demon slayer named Lily.

Demon slayer?

Ya. The vamps brought her to help us figure out how to disconnect the bonds.

In two seconds, Rafe is out of bed and standing in front of us, wearing only jeans.

I don’t have to mention what seeing Rafe in nothing but a pair of jeans does to me, but I will. My alpha knows how to wear a pair of jeans. They’re low on his hips, just low enough the top of that gorgeous V of muscles shows. They hug his thighs and ass perfectly, and not a small part of me wants to get down on all fours and give that perfect peach a nice big love bite.

“What have you discovered so far?” he asks, flashing me a dark, delicious stare as he no doubt catches the vibe of my dirty thoughts.

Lily, doesn’t look away from that spot around my shoulder. “Hi, I’m Lily, and I’m still trying to work it out.”

“Sorry. I’m Rafe. Is there anything I can do to help?”

Lily’s silent for a few beats, tracing the path of the bond through my energetic body. “Is this the Champion?”

“No,” I say. “This is my alpha. My first mate.”

Lily nods. “Can you connect to your Champion’s bond please?”

I nod and crash through the wave of anxiety at her request. Drago and I haven’t spoken in our bond since the revenant.

We didn’t talk about it. We ignored it like everything else.

Drago. Are you awake?

His answer doesn’t come immediately but slowly. I feel him waking and registering my voice in his head.Beloved, it’s a pleasure to hear you in my thoughts once more.

“There we go! Keep at it, Willa. I just need to track this one through your system to see how interlinked it is with everything else.”

There’s a woman here trying to figure out what the Werebitch is.

I leave the other thing she’s trying to do unsaid. Telling him feels like a betrayal. Like I’m also telling him I’m OK with him sacrificing himself to the Wendigo. And I am definitely not.

He connects the dots on his own, anyway.

Drago sighs in my head. That brings me great relief, Willa. I never wanted my sacrifice to be yours as well.

My head falls forward, and that stupid stinging in the back of my eyes returns.I don’t want this life without you.

I know, sweet girl. I know. But this was always to be my fate.

The last thing I want is to be bitter about this. And yet…It’s easy to say that when you’re not the one getting left behind. All you have to do is die. I have to live without you.
