I’d watched fashion competition shows where the contestants went there to shop. It excited me on the screen but in person…wow.

There were rows upon rows of every fabric in the world. Knowing we had three floors to explore, I understood why Xander suggested we needed days, not hours. No way would I get through it all so quickly. But fortunately, he knew just where to go.

He greeted a salesperson by the first name and announced, “We’re working on a fall collection. You know I’m all about hats, purses, and sporty menswear. Nadia is…” He turned to me to speak.

“Womenswear, knitwear, evening, and recently, couture.”

“A first-year fashion design student,” the salesperson joked, and I gave her a bashful smile.

Xander twirled down the aisle like he was on a runway. “Let’s do this.”

He showed me knits, suedes, leather, lace, and embroideries. We had beads, buttons, and pins. Whatever supply we needed, Mood had. There was no end to what we wanted to explore. It was like we were back in high school, dreaming up ideas.

“What do you think about a play on the trench coat? Since The Grill dress is the showstopper. I want to make some suits and a gown.” Xander asked as he pulled out our sketchpads and a pencil.

I did a quick sketch, and he added a hat and scarf. “Tweed. And those buttons. I want some embroidery.”

“Oh, and knit,” I added.

Xander enthusiastically nodded. “Oh, yes. God. We need to slow down, or we’ll end up with a patchwork mess.”

We brought yards and yards of fabrics to the counter. After getting all the extra supplies, I knew we were spending thousands of dollars.

“We’ll make something for Paul. Don’t worry.”

My stomach turned queasy, and I broke out in a sweat.

“Credit card and ID, please,” the salesperson asked.

I fumbled in my purse and handed them over. Please don’t decline.

Ding.

I let go of the breath I was holding.

Xander laughed. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”

“Let’s not do too much damage today,” I said and checked my phone a few times on our ride to Gizmo to view sewing machines. No calls.

However, when we went inside, we were unsure.

“Let’s just take notes today and go clothes shopping,” Xander suggested.

We left for Bloomingdales.

“We’ll leave Saks Fifth Avenue for when you’re used to spending money.”

I needed new clothes and Bloomingdales wasn’t cheap. I was a bargain hunter, and every time I steered toward the off-brand racks, Xander tugged me on.

“What would it look like with Paul in Armani and you in…miscellaneous?”

That’s how it was at The Grill. But with Paul, he had an air about him that silenced any questions. Regardless, Xander had a point, and I couldn’t argue that I needed better-quality clothes. Still, I only planned to get a couple of outfits and a dress, should we go out.

“Well then, if that’s all, we’ll load your cart, and you’ll try on a bunch of clothes until you find the best for you. But you do need shoes and a handbag, too.”

Xander grabbed a cart and filled it with jeans, boots, dresses, and shirts.

After a few changes, I settled on a couple of casual scoop neck shirts and two pairs of dress pants and jeans. Finally, I chose the Mac Duggal black sequin cocktail dress for a night out. It had been my dream to own one afterwatching Sophie breeze through the door with many.
