“It’s just going to be funny as hell when Father finds out you slept with a member of the Lovell pack!” His brother let out a high laugh, almost like a hyena, then the two of them fell against each other, chuckling.

Reika stared at Owen as his eyes slowly slid across to hers.

Is he … Raff pack? Did he know?

She sure hadn’t. Her senses were too dulled from not shifting for so long.

TWELVE

OWEN

Owen’s heart thundered in his chest, making his blood roar in his ears and throb at his temples. Reika looked so beautiful and innocent sitting on his bed, her pale, straight blonde hair carelessly tousled around her pretty face.

Her eyes shimmered in the gray light slanting through the window, and he saw hurt there. He understood, he really did, but he hadn’t known she was a wolf shifter, and he certainly hadn’t known she was a Lovell.

How did I not know? My brothers clearly smelled it on her when I hadn't.

She sighed, seeing the confusion on his face. “You didn’t smell me because I haven’t shifted in a long time, and that side of me has weakened so much.”

He was struggling to believe the enormity of the situation. The perfection of the night before lay in shards at his feet. As Reika’s eyes widened further, he realized that the revelations might not yet be done.

For fuck’s sakes, what next?

“Mateo, Connor,” he said, turning to his brothers with his hands out and palms up. “Please, don’t tell Father.”

“Why not?” Connor asked with a grin and a wink. “It looks like a great story to me.”

“Me too,” Mateo said, laughing. “I think it’s juicier than a newborn rabbit.”

Owen felt anger flooding his blood, but he refused to let it show. He’d only antagonize his brothers even further if he lost his temper. He looked back at Reika sitting on the bed, and his heart fell with disappointment. He wouldn’t get to roll around with her first thing in the morning when they were still drugged with sleep or eat breakfast with her and find out how she liked her coffee.

The disappointment was crushing his heart, but he still felt like the ax had yet to fall. Reika looked away, gulping down a deep sigh as she gathered her strength before looking back up at him.

He shook his head, not wanting her to speak. He was already wondering how this could get any worse, but he knew if she spoke, it would. They were forbidden to be together. Their packs were only a few short steps away from war, even at the best of times.

“I’m not just a Lovell,” Reika said softly. Her eyes were fixed on his with the same kind of intensity as the night before, but now, it wasn’t sexy. It was terrifying. “I’m the alpha’s sister,” she said, her voice hoarse. “I’m Uldof’s sister.”

Owen almost staggered, the information hitting him so hard. He tried to turn to face his brothers, hearing them both making sounds of disbelief and amusement.

“Please, Connor, Mateo, don’t tell,” he muttered weakly.

Connor smirked, and Owen realized this was going to go from very bad to completely catastrophic in less than two seconds flat.

“Well, I think it’s my duty,” Connor said, sticking out his chest. “I just found you fraternizing with the enemy pack. Something has to be done about this.”

“Connor, please, I didn’t even know …”

“You really expect me to believe that!” Connor cried, triumph in his tone.

"We wouldn't even have to tell. You reek of her," Mateo added slyly.

“Just mind your own business,” Owen snapped in a last-ditch attempt to shut his brother up. Connor flashed him a truly evil smile and went for the door quicker than Owen could stop him. A groan slipped out of Owen’s mouth as he saw his brothers go.

Connor wanted to be alpha. He’d been waiting for an opportunity like this, and now Owen had handed it to him on a silver platter. He turned back to the bed, seeing Reika getting up. He reached for her, and she moved back, warily eyeing his outstretched hand.

“This is bad,” he said. “Really bad. I’m going to get kicked out of the pack. My father will be fucking furious.”

Reika shrugged, her green eyes like sharply cut stones as she glared at him. “Not that it’s my problem, but I’m just going to leave, and I’m sure as hell never going to admit to this. So, you don’t have to worry. As far as I’m concerned, this never happened.”
