He knew that Reika didn’t want to go to a human hospital. That made sense, but they were running out of options when it came to finding the proper doctor. So he made his way back out to the water, searching for those odd ships and what they could do to potentially help them.

Owen and Reika both knew that the ship they took back to the island only came out every two to three days. That was far too late for Reika and her delivery. She was so close, he could feel it in his body, in his heart.

Some random boat or ship on the shoreline was truly their only hope.

Owen shifted into his wolf as he ran across the island. It was dark and almost stormy, but he didn’t care. He was driven by love and adrenaline, two motivators that weren’t going to takenofor an answer. As he made his way around the bend, he spotted the same boat he had previously seen, the same one with his alpha brother, Connor.

He felt a surge of anxiety in his throat, but Owen had to move past that. If they could help Reika have their baby, he would be forever thankful. Whatever had come between their families was something that could be dealt with later.

He sprinted over to them in wolf form, their figures shrouded in darkness. He shifted just before they spotted him, throwing on his jacket over his naked body.

Owen was shocked to see that Mateo was with Connor. He was the quiet one in the family, the gentle giant. But Owen knew that the pressures of the pack were immense, so he couldn’t blame him completely for caving in.

“Mateo! Connor!” Owen called out without hesitation.

Connor immediately went into a fighting stance while Mateo looked out at his brother with hesitation. He didn’t want to be there. Owen knew it.

“Wow, he lives!” Connor called out.

Owen had to ignore his brother’s jester-like personality. “Reika is in labor,” he said, breathing hard. “I need your help. Please, please, I am begging you!”

Connor stepped onto the sand, making his way to his older brother. His eyes flashed nearly black in the dark, and Owen came to find that he was slightly afraid of him.

“Did you think that we’re running some kind of taxi service here?” Connor snarled. “We are here for you, to show you to your maker, dear brother.”

Owen held his hand together in prayer form, then turned to Mateo. He was still standing in the boat, looking like more of a prisoner than a soldier.

“I know that I have things I have to deal with,” Owen began. “I really do. But Reika can’t go to a human doctor. She needs to see a shifter doctor. Please, for the sake of an unborn child!”

Mateo tried to look away, but Connor slapped his shoulder, which startled both Owen and his sweet brother.

“Look at him, begging!” Connor cried. “This is like watching reality TV, wow!”

“Connor,” Mateo hissed.

Connor looked back upon the boat that was rocking in the raging waves. Technically, Connor was the new alpha or was going to be, at least. Having Mateo question him at any point wasn’t regular, not ever really tolerated.

But Mateo was brave, and Owen knew it.

“Are we really just going to leave them here?” Mateo said. “Leave them and their child just to die?”

Connor had a lapse in judgment for a moment, his clown-like smile fading away. He grunted, then hopped back into the boat. “We will bring it around to your side,” Connor snarled. “Then we will take your woman to Holo. But that is all we are promising.”

Owen felt like he could burst into tears, he was so happy.

He guided them around to the opposite side of the island and then ran inside to Reika. She was writhing on the couch as lightning flashed, a cataclysmic clash of the emotions of woman and God.

“We’re taking you to Holo,” Owen said.

She tried to question him, to argue. But Owen wasn’t having any of that.

He picked up his pregnant mate and held her close as he made his way out into the stormy night. She was like a feather in his arms, hollering in pain and moving around like a fish out of water.

When they came upon the boat, Reika reacted just the way Owen had imagined.

“What the fuck are we doing?” she cried out.

Mateo took Reika as Owen climbed into the small boat. She was laid on the nearest bench as Connor turned the boat around and began blasting back to the mainland.
