OWEN

Owen couldn't believe what she was asking of him. She was asking him to stay while their child was in the arms of the enemy. He wanted to argue and tell her she was crazy. He couldn't stand by while his son was in the arms of someone else. But Reika was hurt, and he couldn't leave her either.

He also knew she had a point. He didn't have a plan, and if he went in there without one, they could hurt his son.

"Owen, you'll want to turn away," Holo said. "She's going to have to expel the afterbirth. There is going to be blood everywhere since she didn't expel it the correct way."

Owen kept his eyes on Reika, brushing her hair back. She was shaking uncontrollably and covered in sweat. Blood was everywhere. He wiped at some on her neck, feeling tears build up. How had they gotten here? So far into this mess.

He could hear Holo muttering, and as he did, Owen's worry only grew. Something was wrong. He knew it.

"Fuck!" Holo cursed and grabbed at towels, blood pouring onto the ground. He looked over, and his stomach sank. Blood was splattered and puddled, and it looked like a murder scene.

"She's hemorrhaging," Holo said, her hands moving quicker. Owen looked away, brushing at Reika's hair. It was all he could do. He could only take in her face, trying to engrave it into his mind.

The minutes felt like hours as Holo tried to get everything back to normal. It felt like God was punishing Owen for something he couldn't even remember.

"There." Holo threw a pan onto the table and wiped her hands onto her pants. "I've done what I can, but she's lost a lot of blood. She hemorrhaged, and it pushed her too far, Owen. She needs a blood transfusion."

Owen looked up, looking at Uldof, who had been standing by the door looking like a statue. He blinked, his eyes flickering from Reika up to him. Owen swallowed, looking at Holo. "I don't have her blood type."

Holo frowned. "She needs a transfusion, or she won't make it. This isn't a discussion. I'm saying this is a life-or-death situation, Owen. She needs a transfusion. She needed one hours ago."

Owen felt tears build, and he pinched at his nose. He had worked too hard and fought too much for this to be the end. He couldn't lose his mate, and his child in one fell swoop.

"I have her blood type," Uldof said calmly, pushing himself away from the door. "The luck of being siblings, I guess."

Holo moved before Owen could even process what that meant. Uldof was seated in a chair beside Reika and placed the needle into his arm. Holo placed another into Reika's arm.

Owen blinked, tightening his grip on Reika's hand. A slight relief hit him, but only briefly.

"Thank you," he said, looking at Uldof. "Thank you for this."

"Don't." He looked down at Reika. "This isn't for you. This is for my sister. The person who has done nothing but follow the rules and live life peacefully until you came along. Me giving blood isn't for you, Owen. This is for my sister."

Owen gripped his other hand into fists. "I don't want to fight, Uldof. I didn't ask for this. Neither of us asked for this. Do you think we planned this?"

"That's apparent." He snarled back. "Because otherwise, my sister wouldn't be pregnant with your child."

"How can you say that? Do you not care about your sister's happiness?"

Uldof's voice dropped low in a growl. "Don't even start about my sister's happiness. She was happy! She was perfectly happy before you came along. Since you, she's done nothing but run."

Owen didn't know what to say. He couldn't say anything. It was true. He looked away, looking at Reika.

"I love her, believe it or not, but I do. She means the world to me. Would I be here if she didn't? Would I risk everything if I didn't?"

Uldof remained silent, and he was okay with that. He didn't want to talk anymore anyway. After a while, Holo pulled the needles. "That will be enough. It's up to her whether she wakes up now."

Uldof took a step back, staring at Reika. Owen swallowed, wishing he could do more. The wait was killing him.

"Uldof." Someone came to the room and looked at him. "We need you."

"Go," Owen said, not breaking eye contact with Reika. "Your pack needs you. You've done all you can for her."

He didn't say anything but gave Reika a kiss on her forehead before he slipped out. Owen bent his head down and said a soft prayer. He wasn't ready to lose her. He wasn't willing to.

After a few hours, Reika groaned. It was like magic to Owen's ears, and she pulled a hand up, pressing it against her forehead. "My head. It hurts like I hit someone."
