What am I going to do?

He cried and hiccupped and kicked his legs. I saw him reach his hand down for his brother. With some difficulty, I adjusted him over one shoulder and pulled Jacob into the other arm, holding them both against my chest so they were side by side.

Almost instantly, their hands found each other, and they settled.

“Oh, okay,” I sighed, looking at the boys. “Only now after weeks of screaming I find out the secret. You want mommyandyour brother.”

My stomach growled.

The yelling outside continued.

I held my boys.

What am I going to do?

CHAPTER FIVE

It was a typical day at the office. My Pitbull, Brutus, was curled up at my feet, snoring loudly and letting the cool air from the air vent below blow over him. I had a cup of coffee on my desk that was getting cold, and I was shuffling through the work orders for the upcoming jobs in the next month.

In front of me, the letter from the private detective, along with the invoice for his time, sat on my desk.

Andy,

There are a lot of Suttons in the area, but I didn’t find anyone with that surname matching thedescription you provided. Happy to keep looking for a single mom named Ruth, and a half-native daughter, but people aren’t forthcoming. Your best bet may be to place an ad in the paper and rely on busy bodies to fess up or feast on drama.

Good luck

Frank

I sighed as I put the letter in my desk drawer and the invoice in the basket. It had been almost six years since I’d seen Ruth Sutton and the little girl. It was hard not to lose hope.

I can’t stop looking,I told myself. It’s not fair to either of them.Somewhere out there, I had a little girl who didn’t know her daddy, who didn’t know her last name and what it meant, who would grow up without her people. And it hurt every time I thought about it.

The phone rang, and I picked it up. “Greenwood Construction.”

“Hi Andy, it’s Marybeth.”

“What’s up, Marybeth.”

“There’s agirlon the line for you.”

“A girl?” I said. The way Marybeth had saidgirlimplied something important. My heart rate tripled and my hands broke out in a sweat. I hoped to hell I’d hear Ruth on the other end. Maybe all my searching had paid off.

“Okay, put her through.”

There was a beep, and then a click.

“Hello?” A soft, sweet voice filled my ear.It definitely wasn’t Ruth.

“This is Andy,” I said, trying to hide my disappointment. “How can I help you?”

“Drew?”

I froze. There weren’t many people who called me that.

“Andrew Greenwood, right?”

“Yes,” I hesitated. I didn’t want to hope too hard that it washer.
