Page 54 of A Reason to Stay

When we were done unpacking, we let the boys play on the floor of their bedroom while Drew and I stood in the kitchen, and we called our parents.

He went first, and the conversation went about as expected. His folks were ecstatic, and I could hear his mother crying on theother end of the line. He pulled me close to his face so I could hear through the phone.

“How dare you get married without letting us be there!” I heard her say through her tears.

“We’ll have another one later, with flowers and cake. But I had to lock her down.” He winked at me. “It was that or get her pregnant again.”

My eyes widened and I felt my face flush. “Andrew,” I whispered, pulling back slightly.

“Hey, is Jonah there?... Great, put him on… Hey brother. When do you leave? Okay. Listen, I have a situation. Maria’s mom needs a place to stay for a while.”

He was going to have my mom stay with his brother? I started to speak but he placed a finger over my lips. “I don’t know how long it’ll be, but with you being gone for the year, I figure she can take care of your place and she’ll have a chance to get herself situated up here during that time. That okay?... Okay. Great…Hunting? No, not this weekend. We’re going to be kind of busy. Say hi to Sully for me.”

He finally hung up.

“Your brother?” I asked.

“He’s taking a job out of state for a year, maybe longer. He asked if I would look out for his place… but since your mom needs an out…”

I kissed him. “Andrew, that’sperfect.”

“You’re perfect,” he said, taking my chin in his hand and pulling my mouth back to meet his. His tongue pressed against the seam of my lips, and I sighed as he slid it inside. He groaned into my mouth. “So fucking perfect.”

I pulled back slightly. “You know, I love that your verbaldamhas broken… but we’re going to need to work on your swearing.” I grinned at my pun while he glared at me.

“Oh, we can work on my swearing,” he growled, grasping my hips and pulling me tight against him. I laughed as he pushed his face into my neck and kissed his way down to the neckline of my shirt. “I’ll show you somegreatswearing.”

“Andrew, get off me…” I laughed, and then sobered. “It’s my turn.”

He sighed and pulled back. I had no clue which parent would answer, or how my mom would react. I could only hope she’d be happy for me.

Neither of them answered. I got the answering machine. Startled, I struggled to leave a message. “Hey!... uh, mom, call me, I have some news. There’s been a slight change of plans. And by slight, I mean major. Anyway. Talk to you soon. Love you. Bye.”

I hung up the phone and sighed. “I hope she’s not too disappointed in me,” I said softly.

“Why would she be?”

“I don’t know… I guess that’s still the first thing I feel when I think about either of my parents. Knowing what I know now, my mom was probably trying to keep the peace in the house, and took my dad’s side out of self-preservation.”

“When you say self-preservation… is he hurting her?”

I bit my lip and shrugged. “She didn’t say. I don’t think so… not physically, at least. But Drew, I’ve never, ever heard her cry. I’ve never heard that tone in her voice. I had to help her. Ihaveto.” I felt my eyes well with tears as I remembered the sound that my mother had made when she’d choked on her sobs over the phone.

“We’re going to help her, Sugar. I promise.”

“Thank you, Drew.”

“I love you so damn much, Maria Greenwood.”

I bit my lip and sighed. I really liked the sound of that.

He took my face in his hands and kissed me passionately, walking me back towards the kitchen counter as he lapped at my mouth. His hands went down to my waist and he picked me up, and I laughed in surprise as he sat me down on the counter, spreading my knees and pressing himself against me.

“How long do you think they’ll stay busy in there,” Drew growled into my mouth.

“Not long enough,” I purred back.

The phone rang and I jumped. He sighed heavily and pulled away, handing me the phone and holding my knees while I brought it to my face.
