So when she’d felt how aroused North was against her body, Ellie should have been embarrassed and clambered off him. But she hadn’t. Instead, she had wanted to feel more of him. She had wanted to strip off his clothes and explore his body.

What was wrong with her? This was not how a proper lady behaved. However, at this point, Ellie was at a point where she didn’t really care.

She just wanted to be in a position to do that with North again.

God, her governess had warned her that when she found a man she desired, she would want to be as close as possible to him. Ellie hadn’t really understood what she meant until now.

As she crossed the house towards the morning room, Ellie smoothed down her gown, hoping she looked presentable. She wasn’t feeling like a drowned rat after having a hot bath the day before, and she had thankfully not gotten a cold. But Ellie still felt a bit like a mess.

“Ellie?”

Ellie turned, and saw her aunt coming down the stairs, looking ready to go out.

“Yes, Emma?”

“I heard the front door a moment ago. Has Mother gone out?”

“Did Aunt Diane mention going out today?”

“Not that I know of.” Emma shook her head. “But she is now interested in how the three of you are getting on with finding a husband. Apparently, someone needs to take you three in hand and make you more… presentable.”

Ellie could only guess that that actually meant. She shook her head.

“She doesn’t need to worry about anything. We’ve got a Season to get married, as far as I’m aware. It’s not going to happen immediately.”

“I told her that, but she wants to stick her nose in after all this time practically ignoring you and the other girls.”

“You mean she wants to sabotage us.”

“I don’t think she sees it like that in her mind.” Emma frowned. “So, do we have a visitor, or was I imagining things?”

“The Earl of Northampton is here. I’m just about to see him.”

Her cousin’s eyebrows rose almost up to her hairline. “Oh, are you?”

“Don’t worry, I’ll keep the door open. You don’t have to be concerned about me.”

“Well, I’ll make sure Mother keeps away in the meantime.” Emma winked. “I’m sure you don’t want anything to be… interrupted.”

Ellie stared. “Emma!”

“Well, you can’t have missed how he was looking at you when you were having tea with him. He was certainly very… well, let’s say obvious in who had his attention.”

“That’s not the case!”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes!” Ellie was sure she was bright red. “I doubt the earl is interested in me. I’m nothing like my sisters.”

“Don’t sell yourself short. You’d certainly be a good choice for him, if I’m honest.”

“But…”

“Don’t think that you’re not worthy because of your sisters. You have more worth and value than you give yourself credit. And you are allowed to have something for yourself.” Emma tapped Ellie’s chin. “Now, off you go. You have a handsome young man wanting your attention.”

Ellie stared after her aunt as the older woman headed towards the back of the house. Why did it feel like she had been given a talk? It felt odd after doing it to her sisters for so long.

And North wasn’t going to leave until he had seen her. Hovering out in the foyer was just not going to help anyone.
