He smiles proudly at me. “I know you can.”

Boris leans in and kisses me on the cheek before opening his bedroom door. Margaret pads into the room, and I watch the door close behind them.

Damon and I head to my bedroom. He instantly hops onto the bed and looks at me expectantly. I go to him and lay on the bed, closing my eyes for a moments rest. When I feel Damon’s hand run down my arm, I open eyes to find him changed and completely naked.

We don’t use words to convey how much pain we’re both in or how much we’ll lose in just an hour’s time. We make love, gentle and slow, hoping it will be enough to last me a lifetime. There’s no guarantee Damon will fall in love with me again. With all of our circumstances changed, the chances of him loving me and hating me, or worse yet, being indifferent to me, are all equally likely to happen.

When our time together is close to coming to an end, I rest my head on Damon’s chest as we lay naked and sated together underneath the covers.

“I love you,” he says, running his fingers down the side of my body.

I raise my head and look into his eyes. “And I will love you until the day I die.”

“Find me,” he begs. “Don’t let me wallow in a half-life because that’s exactly what it would be without you in it.”

“I will find you,” I promise.

But who will I find? It’s a question neither of us can answer.

“Kiss me,” I murmur. “I want the feel of your lips against mine to be my last memory of the real you.”

Damon kisses me like a man desperate to make a lasting mark.

I don’t remember falling asleep. The next thing I remember is waking up in my bed by myself.

Forever alone.

The memory of me forever lost to those I love.

Chapter 14

(Emily’s Point of View)

Inever thought I would marry twice in my lifetime, and after losing Mark, I never once imagined I would be so giddily happy to walk down the aisle to another man. It’s proof that miracles happen every day, and I’m the lucky recipient of one of those rare happenings.

As I make my way down the staircase to the grand ballroom where the ceremony will be held, my mother yaps in my ear about how gorgeous the reception will be. I tune her out until she tells me my father agreed to place a sheet over the bed Oberon and I are supposed to use for the bedding ceremony.

“It was really Iris who convinced him though,” she says as we descend the last step. “That girl can beverypersuasive when she puts her mind to something.”

“That was nice of her.” I rearrange the long blue train of my dress.

Where humans wear white to their wedding to signify purity, fae wear a sky-blue color to signify unity of husband and wife for all eternity.

“Oh dear,” my mother says with tears in her eyes, “I missed your first wedding, but not the most important one of your life. I can’t tell you how proud I am of you, Emily. The way you and Oberon worked together to put your father in his place. Well, it was masterful. Now the fae truly do have leaders who will help them progress.”

“Thank you, Mother. We couldn’t have done it without your help.” My head tilts of its own accord as I study my mother’s white gown trimmed in gold embroidery. “Though, I’m surprised you’re so ready to give up the crown.”

“I’ll have my own projects to keep me company soon. Ivy and Jack should be allowed to exit Earth 104, and my great-granddaughter will need my guidance while you’re busy with your new duties. Oh,” she places a hand over her heart, “I can’t wait to meet her. Then my set will be complete.”

“Your set?” I look at her queerly. “Your set of what?”

“Children, of course.” She giggles like my question is the silliest thing she’s ever heard. “I’ll have all my children surrounding me for many years to come. Now, let’s get you married, shall we?”

She holds out a crooked arm for me to take because she’s the one who will be escorting me down the aisle to Oberon. Since he’s still king, my father is the one who will officiate our wedding, and once Oberon and I are married, he and my mother will crown us king and queen of the fae, forever giving up their power to rule.

“Smile dear, all of New Aos is watching this momentous event,” my mother says before the guards open the doors in front of us.

The ballroom is packed to capacity and decorated with the freshest white and pink roses on Earth. I walk proudly by my mother’s side as she escorts me to my future husband.
