As Damon escorts me to two chairs near the back of the house, I know everything will be all right. Damon is my destiny, and destiny has a habit of always getting its way.

Epilogue

“What are you doing?” Kyan asks.

Startled, Agatha jumps slightly. “Nothing.”

Kyan studies the holographic image of Ivy and Damon talking in the backyard of his mother’s cottage.

“It looks like something,” Kyan says, narrowing his eyes at Agatha. “Why are you spying on them?”

Agatha sighs in aggravation. “If you must know, I’m curious to find out how long it will take her to break through.”

Kyan appears perplexed. “Breakthrough what exactly?”

Agatha remains silent as she watches and listens to Ivy tell Damon all about how they first met.

“Do you think I’ll ever be able to fall in love?” Agatha asks unexpectedly.

This time it’s Kyan’s turn to look startled. “Why in the world would you ask that sort of question? Do you want to fall in love?”

“It would be nice to know what it feels like.” Agatha continues to study Ivy. When she laughs, Agatha tries to laugh, but the sound is unnatural. Laughing isn’t in her programming.

“You didn’t answer my question, Agatha. What breakthrough were you talking about?”

Reluctantly, Agatha looks at Kyan. “Would you consider yourself my father?”

Kyan straightens his shoulders, looking uncomfortable with the question.

“I suppose I am in a way. Why?”

Agatha tilts her head. “Do you love me?”

“What has gotten into you with all this love business, Agatha? To be honest, I’m not sure I’m capable of loving anyone.”

“Don’t you want to fall in love?” Agatha looks back at the hologram. “It looks like it would be fun.”

“It’s not fun when you get your heart broken by the one you gave it to,” Kyan snaps, revealing a part of himself to his creation that he didn’t intend to. “Agatha, kindly answer my question to you.”

Agatha turns her strange and rather vacant gaze to Kyan. “I’ve given Ivy a chance to restore Damon’s memories.”

“Youwhat?” he asks flabbergasted. “Why in the world would you do that? It wasn’t part of your arrangement with her.”

Agatha ignores Kyan’s outburst and returns her full attention back to Ivy and Damon.

“Because love is magical. It shouldn’t be wasted.”

Kyan stands beside Agatha pondering his creation’s thought process. She was never programmed to feel empathy, but it appears she learned it all on her own.

“What exactly does Ivy have to do to bring Damon’s memories back to him?” Kyan asks.

“She has to get him to say a code word.”

“A code word? What is it?”

“Biscuit.”

“Biscuit?” Kyan looks at her queerly. “Why such a random word?”
