I still don’t understand how someone can give that out so freely. It’s sacred. But she did. She gave it to me.

“Love you too,” I reply, the words always coming out choked.

Well, fuck me. I can never quite get them out without my voice wobbling. For some reason, it just makes me want to sob like a baby.

The truth is, I did sob the first time she said it to me. I made it to my car, grabbed onto the steering wheel, and wept.

But I can’t do that every time she says it; I need to keep it together. Lexington Cavanaugh only cries when absolutely necessary. I have Teflon skin. I am a motherfucking lizard person.

“Text me if you need me,” I say, and then realize none of them actually will. I don’t know why I even bother saying anything. I’ll check on them when I get home.

Like I said—video cameras everywhere. Well, except for in their apartments. I draw the line there. I don’t want to be a total creeper and I know that Martha walks around without her bra on. She told me so.

My eyes do not need to see that.

As I’m making my way out the door, I nearly stumble into a man hovering in the hallway. He startles a little when I nearly plow into him, and then offers me a soft smile.

“Hi there,” he says, his voice rich and smooth. “Um, do you happen to know if Beth is here, or what room she’s in? She gave me the wrong room number and isn’t answering her phone.”

“And you are?” I ask, skeptical of this guy. He’s too fucking charming. Never trust a man who smiles this easily or has a voice this sexy. This kind of man robs people blind.

“Oh, I’m her grandson, and this is my son, Daniel.”

I glance down at the little brown-haired kid blinking up at me, then I open the door a little and shout, “Brenda, Vikki, where’s the new lady at?”

“What did he say? My hearing aid isn’t working,” Brenda squawks.

“Damn things,” Vikki exclaims. “Should just flush them, like cocaine.”

I hold up my finger at the man and the boy and then stride over to them, leaning down and saying loudly, “New lady, where she at?”

“Oh, room 133.”

“You hear that?” I ask as I make my way back to the door and lean against the frame.

The man nods and extends his hand out toward me. “Thank you. I’m Colin by the way.”

I stare at his hand and then slide mine into his. “Lex. So very nice to meet you.”

I could fuck this guy. Or he could fuck me. I could go either way, really. I don’t discriminate. Although, he seems a little too nice. I usually don’t like that in the bedroom. I’d rather people not be so polite while we’re getting down to business. He looks like the type to thank someone after sex. I shudder at the thought.

No, I want it dirty and rude.

“Why is your hair that color?” the little boy at his side blurts, and I squat down, so we’re at eye level.

“I dye it this color.”

“Why?”

“Because I like it. What color should I dye it next?”

He looks up at his dad as if asking for permission and then says, “Blue. It’s my favorite color.”

“Done,” I say, and then hold up my hand for a high-five.

The little fucker slaps my hand kind of hard and I shake it out with a whistle. “Good one, kid.”

When I stand back up, Colin is smiling softly at me and…oh, no.Nope. Not going there with this guy. This guy wants someone to raise his kid and be a daddy.
