“They went into the greenhouse.”

“Oh, are they looking at the radishes? Because I told Theo all about them…” he starts to move away from us and I jump up, stumbling slightly.

Because whatever Theo and Logan are up to in that greenhouse is not something that my dad needs to see. Although, payback is a bitch and all of us have stumbled in on Mom and Dad going at it one too many times. So maybe I should just let him get a taste of his own medicine.

But then I think of Theo and how mortified he’d be if that actually happened.

I hold out my hand. “Donotgo in there, Dad.”

He looks confused for a minute and then his cheeks darken. “Oh.Ooh. I hope they’re careful with the squash. It’s very delicate. I got those seeds from Aspen.”

Finn stands up behind me, his hand grazing my side.

“I’m sure they’re being very careful, Basil.”

My dad eyes the greenhouse and sighs. “I suppose this is payback for the playlist.”

He smirks up at me and I roll my eyes. “You bet it is. That shit is disgusting, Dad. Like traumatizing.”

My dad chuckles and then says, “Hey, wanna see what I’m making in the garage?”

He pulls the sliding glass door open with a flourish and Finn and I follow him through the house, passing by my mom who is opening another bottle of wine.

“Do not go in the greenhouse, love!” my dad says and my mom freezes.

“Why not?”

“Just don’t do it,” I say as she glances out into the backyard.

“Oh…oh shit,” she mutters, uncorking the wine completely and pouring herself another glass. “Thanks for telling me. My brain couldn’t handle seeing that.”

“Me either. Steer clear,” my dad replies as we step into the garage. The door slams behind us with a crash as my dad flicks the overhead light on.

Off to the side, next to the SUV, is a little wooden swing.

“It’s for Vincent,” my dad says proudly. “I built it this weekend.”

“Goats like swings?” Finn asks.

“Um, yes, and get this.” My dad’s voice lowers. “I’m going to add a seesaw.”

I eye the contraption as I try to envision it. What the hell is Vincent going to do with a seesaw?

“But to use it, Vincent will need a goat friend.”

Ah, there it is.

Finn runs a hand across his jaw. “You’re going to buy another goat, Basil?”

My dad glances back at the door leading into the house and nods. “Hell yeah. I fucking love goats.”

A strangled laugh escapes me. “Mom is going to kill you.”

“She won’t know until it’s too late. She’s going on that girls’ trip next weekend and I’m going to the 4-H fair.”

“You will be dead come Monday,” I say and Finn nods.

“Risky business, man.”
