Lottie continued to shake Nova’s hand as she answered. “Not even close. It’s one of my favorite places. I always return after sixty or seventy years. Pick a new major, live in different housing, do a different student job. The last time, I even ran for student body president.”

Finally pulling her hand away, Nova gave a sarcastic little bow of her own. “I’m in the presence of greatness.”

“I said I ran. I didn’t say I won.”

Nova let out another belt of laughter just as Lottie heard someone call her name. She looked around and noticed the head librarian, Ms. Ethel waving her over.

“You’ll have to excuse me. Please, take a look around. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I’ll catch up to you later on.”

“Do that.” Nova winked and walked toward the non-fiction section of the library.

Oh, no. Lottie thought as she walked away.I’ve met the perfect woman and she reads non-fiction.

###

Lottie locked the door to the admissions office at five o’clock on the dot. It was Friday evening and she had plans. As she reached up to pull the shade down someone knocked on the door. Pounded was more like it. She pushed the shade back up, glaring at the person who dare stall the start of her weekend.

“Oh hi, Lottie.” Nova was waving at her through the door. Lottie quickly turned the lock and let her in.

“We’re closed,” Lottie said, grinning.

“I know but your riveting library tour had me distracted and I lost track of time.”

Lottie nodded, leaning back against the desk. “Oh, yeah? What were you reading?”

“The classics, of course.”

“Jane Eyre? To Kill a Mockingbird? Wuthering Heights?”

Nova shook her head, biting her lip. “Twilight.” Both women burst out laughing at the eye-rolling joke.

“So, since it was your fault for introducing me to the library and making me late for check-in, are you willing to help me out now?”

Lottie shook her head. “Sure, why not. It’s fine. Just make my noticeably short weekend even shorter.” Lottie moved behind the desk to start the computer up. Nova stood on other side, watching intently.

“Why?”

Lottie narrowed her eyes as she clicked through the logins on her computer. “Why what?”

“Why is your weekend so short?”

“Oh. Well, I have to be back here at 8 AM on Sunday then another round of tours for the incoming students.”

“Aren’t you a busy little bee?”

“I am. And you? Are you busy?”

“Generally speaking.”

“Are you busy tonight?”

“Well, I need to check in for college but then I’m not doing anything.”

“Lucky for you you’re all checked in. Give me a minute to print your ID.” Lottie stared at Nova for a few seconds before continuing. “I’m going out tonight with some friends. Couple of rippers, a few shifters. We’ll go to dinner and then some dancing. Would you like to join us? Meet some people around here?”

“Sure.” Nova hadn’t hesitated in accepting the offer. “I’m staying at a little inn in town. What time is dinner?”

“6:30. Do you want to meet me back here around 6?”
