“Hello ladies.” A short, cute woman jumped out of her chair to hug Lottie and stuck out her hand to Nova. “Hi,” she said with a wide smile. “I’m Selena and you are?”

“Hi,” Nova shook Selena’s hand. “I’m Nova. I’m new at Carmilla.”

“Well, let me introduce you.” Selena linked arms with Nova pulling her closer to the table.

“This,” she drew out to quiet the group, “is Lots friend Nova. She goes to Carmilla.” Selena pointed at the women surrounding the table. “This is Willa, Alex, Eve, Janie, and Mae.”

“It’s nice to meet all of you.” The group immediately began to pepper Nova with questions as she and Lottie sat down at the only empty chairs.

“Is this your first time in college?”

“First time at CU?”

“Did you grow up around here?”

“What’s your major?”

“Terror queen? Witch? Or Pixie?”

She was saved by the server. “Have you all decided what you want, or you need another minute?”

Lottie spoke up first. “We need a minute. Thank you.”

“Here.” She handed Nova menu. “Leave her alone. She’s never been here before she needs a minute.”

The group fell into easy conversation as Nova pretended to look over the menu. Did she have a sign on her that screamed “Vampire?” How were they picking up on it. Where she came from her kind were in the proverbial closet. They lived in one place for a few years then moved on. Here it seems like everyone is open about everything.

“Nova?” She snapped out of her thoughts while the server smiled down at her.

“A burger and fries please.”

“How would you like it cooked?”

“Rare.”

“The server nodded knowingly.

The rest of the table ordered, and their conversations resumed. Selena leaned towards Nova. “You don’t have to answer these ‘nosey Nancy’s’ but I am curious what you’re majoring in.”

She smiled at Selena, then addressed the entire table. “I’m not from around here. This is my first time in college and yes, first time at Carmilla. I’m majoring in psychology currently with a minor sociology. And I am a ‘terror queen.’” She lowered her voice at the end, looking around to make sure no one else was listening to them.

“Nova,” Willa said, in her thick Irish accent. “How do you get around in the daylight?”

She pulled a necklace out from the neckline of her dress, looking around again. “This. I was gifted it from my mother’s mother when I was turned, although I never met her.”

“Not too many years ago?”

Nova nodded. “Going on thirty this year.” The women at the table howled with laughter.

“Oh, you sweet young babe!”

“Come on y’all, stop.” Selena swatted at Willa. “I’m only thirty-seven.”

“But you’re a witch. While you’ll live a long time, you’re not everlasting.” Willa said.

“Wait,” Nova cut Willa off. She leaned into the table and the other women followed suite. You’re not all…vampires?” she whispered.

The women chuckled.
