“Can you help us get the boat?” Riley asked.

“Sure. You paying for it?” I didn’t even know why I was asking. These kids had plenty of money. Not that their parents held out their wallets, but they got plenty for allowance and holidays and so forth. Plus, they had tons in savings because what did they need to buy? They didn’t have bills.

“We’ll send you money,” Riley said, getting out her phone.

“Sounds good. So you pick a date and a boat and I’ll get the tickets. There’s no guarantee this is going to work, and I don’t want you to be disappointed. Keep your expectations reasonable.” I put one hand on each twin’s shoulder.

They were bubbling with excitement for this new plan.

“Oh, and if you’re getting off the boat, I should probably be there to pick you up so you’re not just sitting on a dock alone for two hours without supervision,” I said. “So you’ll have to get me a ticket too, to make it plausible.”

They groaned. This wasn’t going to be cheap, but that was their problem.

“I’ll take you out for ice cream,” I said.

They both squealed and hugged me in unison.

“You are too much,” I said, hugging them back.

“Doyou really think it’s a good idea to get involved?” Joy said as I helped her set up the chairs for book club on Thursday night.

“I’m not really involved. I mean, they’re going to do something whether I help them or not, so it’s better if I supervise their plan so they don’t do something completely drastic.” I shuddered to think what those two could get up to if they didn’t have me to reign them in.

Joy nodded and went to set the cups out. “I guess that makes sense.” Sydney arrived and brought a tray of s’mores brownies with her.

“You angel,” I said, reaching for one.

“They’re not that special. I used a box mix,” she said, setting the rest of the brownies down on the table.

More people started arriving and I kept twitching anytime the door opened.

“Do you know if she’s coming?” Syd asked as I stress-ate my second brownie.

“I didn’t get a chance to ask. She was completely avoiding me all week.” I’d tried to ask her those few times I’d seen her, but the words had stuck in my throat and I hadn’t been able to.

The door opened again as I reached for my third brownie and there she was, but tonight she looked…different.

I’d never seen Honor in anything other than a dress or a skirt. She wore jeans and a blouse with delicate pearl buttons and fluttery sleeves.

Jeans. On Honor.

I’d thought she looked incredible in her office wear, but Honor in jeans was something else entirely.

Of course, she still had heels on, but these were delicate little strappy things with crystals on them. You wouldn’t think they’d work with her outfit, but they did.

“Breathe, Layne,” Joy said, hitting me on the arm. I gasped in a breath.

That bitch had actually made me forget to breathe. What the hell?

Honor adjusted her bag and walked in, nodding at people as she took her seat.

“Are you going to go talk to her?” Joy asked.

“What? No. Why would I do that?”

“To be nice?” Joy said and I looked at her as if she’d grown a second head. “You could be the bigger person. And hasn’t she been trying to reach out?”
