“Why not both?” I asked.

The timer still had a few minutes to go, but she wasn’t leaving.

“Well now I have no choice but to find out what makes these brownies so slutty,” Honor said. I couldn’t lie, the way she said the word “slutty” was sexy.

“If you want, we could go over to the guest house to try them. Or you could just take the pan home and bring it back when you’re done. We still need to talk more about what else happened.”

I hadn’t intended on inviting her over to my place but the words just kind of came out of my mouth. We did need privacy for our discussion, so it made sense.

Honor was silent for a beat and then she nodded. “Okay.”

Well shit, now I had to hope that my house was clean. I thought it was, but with my luck there was a pair of underwear in the middle of the couch or one of my vibrators in the drying rack by the sink.

At last, the timer went off and I brought out the brownies.

“They smell really good at least,” Honor said.

“No poison either,” I said cheerfully.

Mark came out of his office and looked from me to Honor and back.

“Brownies?” Mark asked.

“Oh, uh, yeah. I made them in here because your oven is better,” I said. For some reason I didn’t think Honor would like Mark knowing she was going to hang out with me, so I covered.

“Is something wrong with your oven? I can get someone here to look at it,” he said. I waved him off.

“No, it’s fine. This one is just more efficient. Makes for gooier brownies,” I said. He nodded and then got a phone call that he took back down the hall.

“Shall we make our escape?” I said to Honor. She looked back toward where Mark had disappeared.

“I’m not sure if I should leave yet. He might need something.”

I rolled my eyes. “He’s a grown man and he has your phone number. Come on.”

I picked up the still-hot pan with oven mitts and headed out the door, not waiting for her.

Then I got stuck because I couldn’t get through the door because my hands were full.

“Need a hand?” Honor asked.

“Please,” I said, and she reached around me to open the door and then got ahead of me as we headed for the guest house.

“Sorry for the mess,” I said the second she stepped inside. It wouldn’t have mattered if my house was cleaner than it had ever been. I would still apologize for mess.

Honor turned slowly as I set the pan of brownies down on the counter.

“It’s nice,” she said.

“Is that a compliment?” I asked.

“Maybe,” she said, smiling.

“The brownies have to cool for a few more minutes before we can slice them,” I said. “Did you want some tea or water or anything?”

When I woke up this morning, I did not think that I would be serving Honor drinks and brownies in my house, but if you asked me before last night if she would have kissed me, I would have said that was out of the question, too.

“Tea is fine,” she said, and she sat right down on my couch.
