Page 8 of Kissed By Her

“She’s here now, too?” Riley asked. “She was at dinner last night.”

“I don’t like her,” Zoey said. I wanted to hug both of them.

“Now girls, if we don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” I said, trying to be a good nanny.

“She’s mean and she’s here all the time,” Riley said.

None of these were lies, but I zipped my lips and shoved them back toward the pool.

“Go, the pizza is getting cold.”

They skipped off to join their friends, who had put all the floats together to form a mega float and had blankets and towels to make beds.

Mark put the movie on, and I went around to make sure everyone had what they needed.

Honor had taken one of the deck chairs and appeared to be trying to draw Mark into conversation, but he got a phone call and went back inside to take it.

“Crashing the twin’s dinner and now their party? Could you be any more transparent?” I asked, sliding into the seat next to her.

She sipped at a glass of lemonade and turned her eyes to the movie screen. I knew she wasn’t watching this.

“I had to pick something up from Mark and he invited me to stay,” she said.

“Right, sure,” I said, getting up and snagging a few pieces of semi-cold pizza and throwing them on a plate. I’d been so busy with the party I’d barely eaten all day and I was famished.

“You know, Mark is absolutely and completely in love with Sadie,” I said, pulling a pepperoni off the pizza and munching on it before folding the slice in half and taking a huge bite.

I hoped it made Honor uncomfortable.

“I don’t know why you’re telling me this,” she said, her voice cool.

“Whatever. You didn’t come here for the kids or the movie or the pizza, so that must mean you’re here for Mark. I know he doesn’t see it, but I do. I’ve got my eyes on you.”

I took two fingers, pointed at my eyes and then pointed at her to show I was watching.

Honor rolled her eyes. “You’re a very dramatic person.”

“A dramatic person that sees through your little plan.”

I munched on my pizza and she flinched. Ha.

“Want some pizza? I’ll share.” I held out my half-eaten slice.

“No, thank you,” Honor said, not taking her eyes off the screen.

“You’re no fun,” I said just as Mark came back.

“Are you hungry? We’ve got tons of pizza,” he said to Honor.

She beamed up at him and I almost choked on another bite. “I’d love some, thank you.”

Mark got her a piece as well as some napkins. She took it from him with a grateful smile.

“Why don’t you sit down? You look like you’ve been running around all day,” she said, and I was shocked she didn’t stroke his arm and bat her eyelashes as she did it.

“Sit down and I’ll grab you a drink,” Honor said, setting the plate down and getting up in one smooth motion. Her dress was deceptively loose, but when she moved, it clung to her every curve. I would say this for Honor, she had an incredible body. Shocking that she hadn’t pulled off the dress and revealed a string bikini that would show even more of her assets.

Mark sat down in the chair on the other side of Honor with a heavy sigh.
