Just as I said that, Lark yawned.

Joy nodded and told Honor that we should get going, but to absolutely let us know if they needed anything else.

“Kendra is ready to start a collection at the bookstore,” Joy said. “Just say the word.”

“Oh, for sure,” Layne said, giving both of us hugs. “We’ll let you know about crowdfunding and all that.”

“And if she needs any plates or mugs or anything, we’ve got her covered. Ask her if she wants blueberries, lobsters, moose, or lighthouses,” I said.

“You’re so sweet, I will,” Layne said with a sigh. “It’s been a long day, but we’re handling it. The twins have already made her a bunch of necklaces and bracelets.”

I hadn’t noticed the bracelets and the beaded necklaces Lark had around her neck.

“Too cute,” Joy said.

“I know,” Layne said.

Joy and I left and got back in my car.

“You should just ask Lark to move in with you,” Joy said. “I mean, she’s going to need a new place, and you have an extra room.”

“Yeah, I thought of that,” I said.

“I mean, you already know her a little bit and you like her, right?”

Liking her wasn’t the problem.

“Yeah,” I said, pretending to be nonchalant about this conversation.

“There you go. A solution to your roommate dilemma.”

Chapter Three

When I got back home,I texted Layne to let her know that if/when Lark needed a place to go, I was open to her being my roommate. She sent back that she was going to ask me if that would be a possibility, but she hadn’t wanted to throw it at me in front of everyone.

Well I’m not having much luck finding someone, and I’m happy to give her a tour and talk about money and so forthI sent. Not that she’d need a tour, since she’d already been here three months ago, but Layne didn’t know about that.

Layne told me that she’d pitch the idea to Lark when she woke up and also gave me Lark’s number so we could talk directly.

I was glad she was getting some sleep, and now all I had to do was wait and see if I was getting a new roommate or not.

The next dayI heard from Lark.

Thanks for offering to let me live with you, but I don’t think it’s a good ideashe sent without preamble.

The shop was empty, so I didn’t feel weird about messaging her back right away.

Why is it not a good idea? The rent is pretty cheap and I’m guessing you don’t have a lot of optionsI responded and hoped that didn’t sound too bitchy, but it was true. Arrowbridge had plenty of homes for sale, but not a lot of apartments for rent.

You know why it’s not a good idea, Sydneyshe sent.

If you’re thinking we can’t be roommates because of something that happened months ago, then fine. It’s not a big deal to me, just so you knowI responded.

She didn’t say anything for a long time, so I went back to pulling items from the shelves to fill online mug orders.

It’s not a big deal to me, I just wasn’t sure how you felt about it. If you think it will be fine, then okay. Like you said, I don’t have a lot of optionsshe finally sent.
