“Fuck you, no I don’t,” I said, standing up, but unsure of where to go. If I went upstairs, I’d be confronted by Lark and I was feeling a little vulnerable right now. This conversation had exposed my raw underbelly in ways that I didn’t like. I hated being vulnerable so much.

“You’re allowed to like someone,” Layne said gently. “And you could do worse than liking Lark. She’s great, Syd.”

“Yes, we both approve. Not that you need our approval, but we both like her,” Joy added.

“This is my nightmare,” I said, closing my eyes. I could feel my body starting to sweat.

“Our baby is all grown up and falling for someone,” Layne said, beaming as she looked at Joy as if this was the best day.

“I hate both of you,” I said.

“No you don’t, you love us,” Layne said, coming over to give me a hug. I growled at her as Joy wrapped her arms around me too.

“I don’t like it,” I said.

“We know, babe. We know,” Joy said, stroking my hair.

Chapter Seven

Somehow,I was able to get them off the topic of Lark and we talked about other random things, including Layne’s proposal ideas for Honor.

“She will murder me if we do it in public, but I know she’s going to want something elaborate,” Layne said. “I don’t do elaborate. I’ve looked up proposal ideas online and so many of them seem so expensive or time consuming.”

“Are you sure she wants elaborate?” Joy said. “I know she’s a very classy woman, but she loves you and I think she just wants something that’s from the heart.”

“I don’t know. It’s stressing me out,” Layne said. “I’m so excited, but I just want it to be perfect for her.”

“It will be,” Joy said. “You’ll figure it out.”

“Just give it to her during sex. Then she won’t say no,” I said, and they both looked at me. “What? It’s true.”

“I’m not doing a mid-coitus proposal, Syd,” Layne said. “But that’s a good idea for you.”

I shuddered. “Absolutely not. No way I’m getting anywhere near marriage.” It was absolutely fine and lovely for other people, but it was a hell no from me. Never, never, ever. Nope.

“We’ll see,” Joy sang, and I glared at her again.

I bracedmyself walking back into the apartment, but Lark wasn’t in the living room when I shut the door. I heard the water running in the bathroom, so she must have been in the shower. Relieved, I set down the leftover food I’d grabbed and walked around, just picking up a little bit.

Lark came out of the bathroom in her towel as I was unloading the dishwasher.

I looked up and we both stared at each other for a few seconds.

“Hey,” she said. “You were down there for a while.”

“Yeah, just talking to Layne and Joy. Didn’t realize how much time had passed,” I said.

“Right, yeah,” she said, shifting from foot to foot. I swallowed, imagining her dropping the towel and letting me lick all the water from her body before fucking her on the couch until she screamed my name.

“I have cake,” I said. “If you wanted any more.”

“Oh, thanks. I think I’m good right now,” she said, starting to walk toward her room.

“It’s in the fridge if you change your mind,” I said, and she reached for her doorknob.

“Thanks,” she said again. “Well, goodnight.”
