“I made you some toast and a little mug of soup,” I said. “Can you get that down before I go? I’ll be back to make you lunch.”

Lark sat up and ate everything I asked her before getting out of bed to take care of herself in the bathroom.

She had a TV on her dresser, a laptop, and plenty of books, as well as her phone, so I knew she wasn’t going to be bored. I was going to leave her door open so Clementine could be a kitty nurse. He’d tried to get in her room every time I had checked on her last night.

Lark came back and coughed a few times before getting into bed again. Clementine was all too happy to jump up and go over to sniff her, recoiling a little bit.

“Listen, sir, she took care of you this weekend, so she doesn’t need any judgment from you. Be a good nurse and look after her today,” I said, petting his head. Clem meowed like he understood.

“I’m going to leave the door open so he can come and go,” I told her. She looked pale and listless.

“I’ll see you at lunch, okay?” I said.

“Okay,” she said as if her throat hurt.

“Take care of yourself, Lark,” I said.

“Mmm,” she said before going back to sleep.

My physical bodymight have been down at the pottery shop, but my brain was upstairs with Lark. I tried not to message her phone too much since I knew she was sleeping, so I just told Mom what was going on and that I’d need to run upstairs when it was slow so I could check on her.

“I’m sure she’s fine,” Mom said. “If she’s really that sick with you checking on her so much, she should go to the doctor.”

“She’s not that sick,” I said. “I did the same thing when Joy was sick.”

Mom gave me a look. Why was she being so perceptive today? I didn’t like it.

I also sent Layne a message that Lark was sick and that she should tell Honor not to worry and that I had it taken care of.

Liam told me she’d gone home early yesterday, poor thing. Let me know if you need anything. I can whip you up some soup today. I’ve got the timeshe sent.

That would probably be better for Lark than the stuff in a can.

Could you? That would be amazingI responded.

No problem at all. I can check on her tooshe sent.

You are the best, LayneI replied.

My girlfriend would agree with youshe responded.

She still hadn’t proposed to Honor, but she was getting closer to figuring out her plans. I still thought simple would be better, but Layne was determined to make it big.

Hurry up and make her your fiancéeI sent.

Working on itshe responded.

Layne droppedthe soup off and sent me a message that Lark was sleeping and looked like she was doing fine.

She was still asleep when I took my lunch break, but I heated up some soup anyway and woke her up to eat it. I sucked down my own bowl while standing at the kitchen counter before heading back downstairs.

Honor messaged me to let me know if we needed anything just to ask.

I’ll let you know if her temperature spikes, or she gets worse, I promiseI sent.
