Mac shook his head and swallowed hard.
“You won’t hold this against me?” He looked around and I knew he meant Jade.
“If it wasn’t for you and Jade, I would not have had Zoë. And without Zoë, I would never have had Nikki as a nanny. Best things that happened to me, those two.”
I put my arm around Mac, squeezed his skinny shoulders.
“I want to look ahead, move forward. What do you say?”
Nikki came in to check on us.
“Zoë is fine. I brought the car in and we’re ready to go. Shall we go home?”
Chapter 29
Nikki
My father stared at me.
“He wants to do what?”
Patiently, I repeated. “He wants to ask you for your blessing.”
“For what?”
“To marry me!” I had to laugh. I had told Will it was unnecessary, that my parents didn’t need to be asked for my hand in marriage like in some historical romance. But he’d insisted.
“It’s the right thing to do,” he said.
“I still think you’re too young,” my mom said, looking at me over the rim of her reading glasses. “Why tie yourself down now? Become engaged and then give it a few years? See if you feel the same in five years and then get married.”
“Why should I wait? It feels right.”
My mom shook her head, and my dad gave a deep sigh, which I took as confirmation.
That Friday night, my mom cooked her inedible vegetarian lasagna. Sean joined us for dinner, unexpectedly, and he gave Will grief all night long.
“You really want to marry her?” he said, as if it was the nuttiest thing he’d ever heard. “You know her, right? What she’s like?”
“I do,” Will said.
“You like hiking then? Mountain climbing? Falling off high things or crashing into them, hurting yourself in foreign locations?”
Will looked at me as if to ask me what was up with my brother.
I could only shake my head. It was always like this.
“How long have you been a vegetarian?” my mother asked.
“I’m not, actually.”
My mother looked at me, confused.
“I never said he was a vegetarian!”
When we drove back to the apartment after dinner, Will looked at me in shock. “Your family is something else.”
