‘Sorry.’ Nat rolled her eyes, still trying to defy him. I could tell that she was doing it out of embarrassment. Just unsure exactly how to act. ‘I still don’t believe you, though.’

‘Natalie!’ Cole roared again, signaling her to join him in the lobby.

‘What’s she talking about?’ My sister’s mutiny seemed to have awakened Seb’s interest, although I couldn’t let him in on what had really happened.

‘She’s just upset with me being absent on the day of your transplant. But I really didn’t know. I would have done anything to have been there with you if it was possible.’

‘I know. You could make it up by taking me to the auto show that is being held in a couple of weeks.’ He devilishly smiled as I was getting certain that he had had this idea in mind for a while now.

‘If you’re well enough, we’ll go.’ I couldn’t really deny him anything he wanted, especially after what he’d been through.

This promise was followed by many more since my brother had the talent of manipulating me into making all his childhood dreams come true. By the time I left the room, I owed him a trip to the auto show, a PlayStation, a long, long list of robots, cars, and apparently a dinosaur. At that point, I was just surprised that he didn’t actually ask for a living one.

And if that wasn’t enough, I stepped out into the hallway to a very angry Natalie. ‘Where were you? And don’t tell me a study trip because I don’t buy it.’

I couldn’t lie to her. She would see right through me. But I couldn’t tell her the whole truth either, so I improvised...a little‘Okay, I was involved in a car accident.’

‘Oh my God! Are you okay? I knew there was something wrong with that trip excuse.’ Nat seemed to be genuinely worried. At least she bought into it. I felt it was far more complicated trying to explain how I seduced the governor than invoking a car accident. Statistically, much more possible of that happening.

‘I’m a lot better now. I still need some time to fully recover, but I’m slowly getting there.’

‘You should have told me. I could have handled it.’ Nat put on a grumpy face, although telling her was never an option.

‘I didn’t want you to see me like that, especially with Sebastian having his surgery. That was enough stress for you two to handle. Now, drop it, and tell me how you’re doing in school,’ I cut her off, trying to find out something that’d been on my mind for a while now.

‘Good...’ she murmured, letting her sight fall to the floor.

But the doubt in Cole’s voice didn’t convince me that what Nat just said was the truth. ‘Nat...’

‘Okay... I’m a little behind,’ she grumbled, keeping her glare to the ground. ‘But I’ll catch up soon.’

‘She changed two home tutors in three days.’ Cole was getting me up to speed.

‘Maybe because I don’t need a home tutor, or you and Ferris are always on my ass about it. I said I’ll handle things, and I will.’ Nat was having an attitude.

An attitude that was apparently also my fault. ‘I wonder where she gets that from...’ Cole muttered, preparing to leave the room. ‘I can’t handle the two of you at once. Nat, just so you know, you’re not getting your phone back until you show me an A.’ Cole waved his hand in which he was holding my sister’s new phone.

‘How did you get that?’ She almost burst into tears witnessing thecruel injusticeCole was subjecting her to.

‘I was the one who gave it to you, and I’m the one who is taking it back.’ I could hear him calling out as he was walking down the stairs.

I wasn’t sure if Cole’s trick would work, but it was better than nothing, and by the look on Nat’s face, she was going straight to her study so she could get her social networking back.

Our chit-chat was cut short by her impatience to get back to the homework. Imagine that. I guess Cole really knew what he was doing by giving her a phone only so he could use it to blackmail her into learning.

Who would have ever figured that he was so good at parenting?

Things found a strange normality. Three weeks of barely getting out of bed or moving from one sofa to another. Nothing important happened. Just Brax came in to announce to us about his man having won the mayoral elections, not that it was any kind of surprise. Ferris was up next for the governor’s position while the Pit residents were standing still, waiting for the outcomes.

Besides those meetings, I only interacted with my family and Cole, but his visits became rarer with every day. I wasn’t going to shed my cold attitude, and he was quickly growing tired of not holding the lead. Plus, from what he told me, Ferris and Brax were slowly getting pissed off with him.

I guess it was one thing sharing but quite another picking favorites, and since I was only speaking to him from the outset, he seemed to be by far mydearestking. Though the main problem was, none of them wasdearto me in any way— not anymore.

It was finally time to return to the Academy, but not before I did something I should have done a long time ago.

‘Let’s go,’ I called out to Jenna, who seemed to be only one step away from fainting.

‘Are you sure about this?’ Her feet were trembling in her stiletto shoes as she was asking.
