When the clock struck 8, I knew all chances of seeing Brax that night were gone. He would usually send at least a text by that hour to meet him somewhere or a demandingmy car is picking you up at 8 PM.

That was it. A date with a glass of wine in the armchair sat next to the window was waiting for me, and the invitation I made to myself was sounding more tempting by the minute. At least that’s what I wanted to think, so I wouldn’t let the lame side of the disappointment I felt rule my evening.

I just needed to take a shower first and change into some fluffy pajamas. I had a specific picture of how my moment should be, and I needed to get at least that part of the day right.

The warm water did me good. Maybe because I spilled a few tears between the crystal drops that were falling on my skin, in the last attempt to relieve some of the stress that was tormenting me. I was still unable to let go of Brax.

I needed that wine ASAP. But I also needed a pair of fluffy socks to make my dream scene come true. I just forgot to pick them up from the dressing room, so a second later, I was heading towards the room to grab them.

I was running through the fourth drawer, still searching for that specific pair I set my mind on, when I heard something moving in my room.

I instantly wanted to scream for help, but the sound of steps closing in petrified me with stupefaction. My eyes searched the room for anything I could utilize as a weapon.

Nothing that I could use was in my field of vision.

Nothing except a few pairs of stilettos.

That needed to do.

I was prepared.

Armed and... not so dangerous, just in time for the assailant to reveal himself.

‘I’d say you’re either a psychic and were already searching for something to wear, or you were just about to Gucci me to death.’ The man my heart lost all hopes of seeing was standing in front of me.

Brax was holding a large white box, very similar to the one he sent me through his driver a couple of months ago.

‘What are you doing here?’ I knew that was probably the dumbest question a person could ask. But I was blank at that moment, surprising myself that I could even speak.

‘Do you want me to leave?’ I guess my foolish question deserved an equally absurd response.

I could only shake my head as ano.

But he already knew the answer. ‘I take that as a no.’ He smiled with a charm that I never noticed before. It wasn’t rehearsed, and it wasn’t hindered by any masks. On the contrary, it was coming from a place I never thought would be revealed— his real self. ‘Do you want to trade weapons?’ He extended the box in return for the pair of stilettos.

A fair trade since, indeed, both objects could be used as weapons of some sort. While my heels could be used in an attempt at self-defense, his present was the weapon that was leaving my heart defenseless.

A silvery cocktail dress and a matching pair of heels— a gift that was setting the grounds for a new beginning.

My stomach was shaking with emotions, yet I was never too good at showing the true intensity of my feelings– kind of like him.

‘You have a thing for gifting me dresses.’ I finally spoke between the throb that was making my voice shake.

‘I’m no match for Ferris at this chapter, but I try. Let’s help you put it on.’

‘Now?’ I was totally unprepared for any plan he would have in mind.

‘Unless you want me to take you out looking like a polar bear.’

Shit, I forgot all about my sleeping outfit. I always imagined that in a moment like this, I would be wearing some silk dress, and my hair and makeup would be styled to perfection. In reality, I looked like a snowball, and my perfect hair was replaced by a messy bun. I couldn’t even get started on the makeup unless eyes reddened with tears could be considered a new fashion statement.

‘Where are we going?’ I hated to ruin the surprise, but I wasn’t exactly sure I liked the types of surprises Brax could come up with.

‘Raise your arms.’ He drove his hands to the hem of my hoodie, pulling it up over my head.

My question wasn’t answered, but that wasn’t actually what was bothering me at that time. I had no bra on, and Brax’s gesture made me quickly try and cover myself.

Seeing my shyness, followed by a certain clumsiness as I kept trying to keep myself together, raised a smile on his lips.
