I tried standing up again, but it was impossible to overcome Cole’s body weight.

‘What do you think you’re doing, Mouse?’

‘I need answers.’ Just because he didn’t agree didn’t mean I was to stay grounded to the mattress.

‘Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough. You’ll stay in bed even if I need to tie you to it!’ His roar of authority echoed through the walls, causing an unexpected chill to travel to the depths of me.

But that didn’t mean I would stop. It was just time for a change of tactic. ‘Cole, please,’ I sobbed, burying my head in one of the pillows.

‘Listen, I’ll talk to Brax and Ferris about it. But I can’t leave the room knowing you’ll be running around here naked.’

I reached for his hand. ‘I won’t, I promise.’

‘I don’t quite believe you. But the nurse will be here at any minute to check up on you, so at least I’ll know you won’t be alone.’

‘Thank you.’ I squeezed his hand just so he could withdraw it the very next second. I guess affection wasn’t what he had bargained for.

‘You can thank me by stopping giving me trouble.’ I could feel the exhaustion hidden in his words. If only he knew how many times I’ve felt the same exhaustion. And especially how many times he was the one that helped cause it.

‘I won’t. Just help me out with this. It’s killing me.’ Maybe it wasn’t the right time for a discussion, but I felt that the wait was only prolonging my agony.

‘I will be the one that kills you if I don’t find you in the exact same position when I return.’

‘I’ll behave,’ I murmured, sinking deeper beneath the sheets just to convince him to go.

‘It gives me a fucking hard-on when you talk like that,’ he muttered, hearing my words of obedience, and the next second stormed out the door.

I didn’t have much time from the moment he left to when the nurse replaced his presence, checking up on me and making sure I took all possible bottles of medicine. At least it kept me busy until Cole returned with a response. ‘Brax cursed every single bone in my body, but both he and Ferris finally agreed that it’s probably best for your peace of mind that we meet; the sooner, the better. I brought you something to wear. I’ve heard bedsheets won’t make the fashion week this year.’ He gestured towards Alfred, who was just bringing in a hanger with a clothes cover on it.

‘I hope it’s not a cocktail dress. Not sure if my nurse would approve of that.’ I giggled, trying to raise onto my elbows.

‘Hey, I heard that. Andshewouldn’t agree to any cocktails either!’ The nurse scolded me from somewhere in the lobby.

‘See, your party days are over. And it’s not a cocktail dress... more like a bag than a dress, if you ask me, but at least it’s loose enough not to give you any discomfort,’ he said, opening the zipper to reveal a loose pink dress, perfect for what I needed at that moment. ‘Brax will be back later tonight. He has some business meetings first. To be honest, I’m surprised he’s even coming back at all.’

‘Why? Because of the way I treated him?’

‘What do you think?’

‘I think he deserved it. Besides, I can’t help it if the truth bothers him.’ I shrugged, playing the innocent when I was far from being that.

‘You know what? I’m done with this subject. You two can work it out by yourselves. You’ve asked me to talk to him, and I did. It’s your business if he stays and tells you what happened or you piss him off the second he enters the door. Just keep me out of it!’ Cole was losing his patience, and I could feel it wouldn’t be long before he’d be the one who would walk out the door.

‘I’m hungry.’ I quickly changed the subject with the first thing that came to my mind. Food. My stomach was feeling pretty neglected, especially since I couldn’t remember putting something in my mouth since... since the day I entered the governor’s house.

‘Alfred was on his way to the kitchen to bring you lunch when I was coming over here.’ Cole stopped to look at the door. ‘There he is now.’

I lifted my head to notice Alfred walking in, holding a tray of... of… ‘What the hell is that? It looks like horse crap!’

‘I’ll send your compliments to the chef.’ Alfred bowed, barely holding back from laughing his ass off. ‘It’s broccoli and chicken pudding. The doctor said your first meals should be crushed vegetables and light meat.’

Cole took out his phone. ‘I’m filming you when you eat that.’

‘Can I have my IV back? I think I preferred the needles over thispudding.’ Seriously, there was something wrong with that food. No meal should look like that!

‘You won’t get better if you don’t eat.’ Alfred was playing mom on me.

And I just decided to let him know I noticed. ‘That’s how you speak to children.’
