Embarrassment.

But mostly, a strange tingle running through the back of my neck straight to the needy place between my thighs.

I couldn’t exactly tell if Ferris’s face reflected irritation or impatience. But one thing was for sure. It was reflecting lust.

The same lust I felt flowing through my body.

‘Cole seemed to be feeling better.’ Ferris’s observation brought a fiery red color to flush my cheeks.

How in the world could I respond to that?

My sight fell to the ground, hoping it would open somehow and swallow me whole.

Yet, Ferris wasn’t willing to cut me any slack on this one. ‘Is it his father you were talking about?’

‘He didn’t want to talk about his father.’

‘It looked to me like he didn’t want to talk at all.’ The devious lift of his eyebrow was letting me know exactly what he had to say.

‘I should go back to my room.’ I tried excusing myself to get out of there as soon as I could.

Although Ferris begged to differ. ‘No, you shouldn’t.’ He was throwing the words at me like pointed arrows.

There was no doubt that I was in trouble.

I just didn’t know how much trouble I was in.

And Cole... he was going to pay for abandoning me there to deal alone with the nerve-tensing humiliation.

‘Come here, Bea.’ Ferris rested one of his hands on the fireplace mantle beneath him, turning to look at the orange flames.

My initial thought was to run. Just crawl under my bed where I could die of embarrassment.

But I couldn’t ignore his calling, especially since I had guilt written all over me.

With fragile steps, I advanced to the place where he was standing.

He didn’t move an inch. Just remained to watch the dancing flames while my heart began to pump so loudly that I was beginning to think he might hear it.

Was I being punished, or maybe just teased? I couldn’t tell any longer, but his attitude was instilling a nervous shake to run deep within my veins.

Mimicking his position, I stopped to watch the suave movement of the flames. They were mesmerizing, alluring, seducing me with their demonic grace. Immortal and devastating yet altogether indispensable.

The best characters are forged in the strength of the flames; Ferris was forged in the strength of the flames. I could feel his unearthly connection with the fire, and it was exactly that connection that was drawing us together.

I felt one of his hands wrapping on the small of my back with snakelike movements until the height of his whole body was standing behind me.

He didn’t even feel human.

He was as mystic as the flickering of the flames we were admiring.

An uncontained groan betrayed his distress, and I could feel the tip of his nose losing itself between the curtain of my hair, just like an insatiable wolf sniffs out his prey.

My thighs squeezed together as an unhindered response to his gesture, waiting breathlessly for his next move.

I expected something suave, gentle like the lips that just found their way over the curve of my neck.

Instead, his hand wrapped around the full volume of my hair, grabbing it into a tight ponytail. Full of eros, he pulled my head backward to kneed on top of a black skull that was majestically illustrated on his shoulder.
