I was hoping for the last option. A teenager’s idea of entertainment since she was the new queen there, but with our luck it had to be way worse than that.

Still, I was infuriated that they didn’t let me in earlier on what was going on. Therefore, I needed to take immediate action.

Without asking for opinions, I decided to temporarily move into Ferris’s mansion, ensuring myself that I wasn’t going to be left out of the loop again.

That wasn’t the only security measure I took. Until we were able to figure out what was happening, everyone needed guards, including her siblings.

I already had my own men always keeping an extra eye out for me. I just needed to find one for everyone else, despite Cole’s constant complaining.

At least Ferris never left the house. One less person on my worry list.

Bea seemed to agree with me and accepted that she was about to have a guard. That was until I asked her to leave and explain things to her siblings so I could have a word with the guys. I saw it as a request while she saw it as an order... women...

‘I thought you said I was free of the deal,’ she pouted, knowing that myrequestwasn’t really optional. I was doing my best to put things in a nice way while she was doing her best to piss me off.

‘You are, but that doesn’t mean you’re free to commit suicide. You got me into thisruling the citything. Now deal with it. I can’t run my businesses, deal with the elections, and have to worry about everyone in this house. That’s not how things work.’ No one really realized the pressure weighing down on my shoulders, the same way no one else in the room could carry it.

I liked to consider that everyone understood, especially since Bea left to do what I asked without adding another word, while Ferris and Cole were trying to get back in my good graces, knowing they screwed things up by not letting me in on what had happened in time.

Bea returned as I was just about to leave, and how else but with a request. She wanted to go to the Academy in the morning, and as long as she was guarded I agreed to that.

No matter how much I wanted to remain there and play detective, trying to find something out, I had a meeting with one of the Annelid’s leaders. More money to waste when if it was up to me I would have wasted a few bullets on the man.Soon, I promised myself heading through the door, not without reminding Bea of our little countdown. ‘See you tomorrow.’

I didn’t rush an answer since things were evolving by the second, but to ease things for me, one ofthe conshad just been crossed over from my list. The chances of her being in danger as the result to any kind of a relationship with me were slim to none compared with the threats she had as a result of her own actions. So, when it came to being a damsel in distress she was doing a great job on her own. In fact, so good that I was starting to consider my presence would bring her protection and not jeopardy.

Not that I couldn’t make up my mind without realizing that aspect. I was beginning to think I made up my mind from that first day in Randy’s office, but I just chose the easy way out, until I got trapped in my own labyrinth with no real escape.

And that exact reasoning had brought me into her room the very next evening.

I even tried surprising her, although sneaking into her room had proven to have awoken the killer within her.

I found her arming her shoe to go to war with whoever she might have thought was disturbing her peace.

‘I’d say you’re either a psychic and were already searching for something to wear, or you were just about to Gucci me to death.’ I cast out a smile as I saw her standing in her dressing room ready for a direct battle.

‘What are you doing here?’ she asked, looking at the white box I was holding in my hands.

‘Do you want me to leave?’ I already knew the answer to that, but I found it amusing to tease her, especially since the very next moment her head shook left and right. ‘I take that as a no.’

‘Do you want to trade weapons?’ Giving her the box I had brought was the easiest way to disarm her. A fair trade, yet one that would cost me.

‘You have a thing for gifting me dresses,’ she observed, opening the box and noticing a silver cocktail dress and a pair of heels to match it.

My generous outburst didn’t go by unnoticed and I didn’t really know how to react to that. ‘I’m no match for Ferris at this chapter, but I try. Let’s help you put it on.’

‘Now?’ Bea seemed surprised at the sudden change in her evening plans.

Not that she had any judging by the puff jumpsuit she had on.

‘Unless you want me to take you out looking like a polar bear.’ I took a step towards her before all thatgood guyattitude would get me back through the door.

‘Where are we going?’ she asked, thinking that there was any chance I would ruin the surprise.

I didn’t even bother to answer, just asked her to raise her arms so I could have her change into the dress I chose for her to wear.

As always, Bea managed to amuse me, trying to cover herself up as a red trace of embarrassment was blushing on her cheeks. How could she even be embarrassed was still a mystery to me?

My gesture wasn’t even vaguely sexual, but it did have an ulterior reason behind it. I wanted to see her naked to check on her bruises. That night in the glass room, I totally dismissed that aspect, being much more concerned with the urgent problems of our souls.
