What did we have to do with any of this?

‘I need you. I need all of you to try and stop this.’ She must have been hallucinating at the time.

Us saving the world!?

Sure.

I just left my fucking cape back in the closet.

I wasn’t the only one who found the idea hilarious. Brax did too but at Ferris’s request, he let her go on with her madness, talking about the end of life as we know it. Too bad my life as I used to know it had already ended.

‘So, what’s the plan, Mouse? Dress us up as fucking Vikings and lead a war against the Elite?’ I couldn’t help but find things amusing.

‘No. Notfucking Vikings... and you won’t have to lead a war, but to end one, or maybe even suffocate it before it begins. If we’re lucky enough and time is on our side.’ Bea must’ve drunk the dog’s water that day, because she was fucking hallucinating.

‘And out of all people, you decided to orchestrate this?’ Brax was asking the right question.

Mouse, of all people was turning into a vigilante… go figure. And the hilarious part was that she was taking her role seriously, ‘Someone has to do it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to lead this. I’m not... how should I express myself?... Devious enough. I’m more like the glue that holds the pieces together…

‘Each one of you brings a special value to the table, which when put together could give us the power to do anything we set our minds to.’

‘Oh, do tell what special power I possess,’ I was curious about what she imagined I could do.

‘What about you tell us? How deep do your connections in the political scene run?’

‘Ocean’s bottom fucking deep. My family has connections even with the president. But as all wheels in motion, every connection must be greased. And these people need a lot of grease to function.’ I tried to explain to her how things functioned in Echo City.

That was where Ferris could intervene.

Jesus, maybe Mouse did have everything planned after all.

I was bringing the political connections, Ferris the financial support, and Brax the underworld ties needed to put things in motion.

But the question remained, ‘What would we get out of this? What would we risk everything for?’ I was curious to learn the reward. She must’ve known that she had to bring something to the table.

‘As much as I would like that a noble answer would satisfy any of you, I realize that it won’t be the case, so I was thinking about a much more important prize for when the final line is drawn in the sand. I was thinking about Echo City. Or at least its leadership. I realize that there is little chance that this will resolve itself just by decent talking. I believe that it will involve getting a few people removed from their positions. And when the vacant seats will be ready....’

‘We will take them,’ Brax concluded her statement, although the idea wasn’t going the way she would’ve wanted. ‘I am a man of ambitions. And I do want the city. But you know what else I want, Bea? I want to be fucking alive when that happens, and what you’re asking of me leaves little chance of that!’

‘What kind of life would we live if we don’t try? Did you think of the alternative? What happens if we stand by knowing what we know and do nothing? Or what if we change our mind when it’s too late?’ Bea was still running her mouth trying to convince him.

… while I was getting sick of the ongoing shitshow, ‘She’s right. How could we ever safely stay in our luxurious homes, knowing we did nothing?’ I was being ironic. There was nothing that we could do, and she knew it.

Although Mouse never recognized the right moment to keep her mouth shut, ‘ I took you for a lot of things, but never for a coward, Cole.’

Her words instantly made me lose my temper, ‘What the fuck did you say to me!?’ I didn’t even realize the moment I crossed the length of the room to clench my hand on her throat with such uncontrolled power that she was having trouble breathing. A choking sound brought me back to reality, ‘Cole’. It was her lungs searching for air, though my hands didn’t seem to let her go of their grip.

I wanted her to pay somehow for what she has done, for constantly testing the boundaries of my patience and crossing the line.

Ferris seemed to agree with me on that one. ‘Stop.’ His hand stopped right above mine, as his body slid behind Bea, to cage her into a human prison.

We had played these kinds of games before, though never out of anger, in my case. And that made it even more exciting. I could feel it even in Ferris’s gaze. We were like lions cornering our prey, scaring her until she would end up obeying us.

Ferris, Brax, and I always had a connection. It was like our beings were united by fucked-up cravings, and that meant no rule was above us, no desire would remain unsatisfied.

The plans Ferris and I had for Mouse could make the darkest minds jolt, yet Brax decided he would take the lead, ‘We have courage, but we’re no fools. Release her.’

‘You’re taking all the fucking fun out of this,’ I let her back on the ground. I was certain Brax had big plans with her, but I also wanted in on the fun.
