‘Don’t tell me you were only teasing me,’ I muttered under my breath, realizing I had no chance of getting out of my pants any time soon.

‘Then, Iwon’t tell you.’ She began walking, leading me in a new direction.

All I knew was that I was getting further from finding happiness.

‘Okay ...okay. Where are we going?’ I asked with the disappointment of a defeated man.

‘There’s a donut shop nearby. I want you to have the complete experience of living in the Pit on a good day.’

Couldn’t the Pit experience include some kind of rooftop fooling around? I for one was sure in on that.

I guess my luck ran out since she led me through a few dim-lit back alleys until we reached a small donut shop.

‘We’re here,’ she cared to announce to me with such excitement that I was beginning to think we had discovered some long-lost relics. At least that’s exactly how the shop looked — like a relic.

‘How could you even spot this place? I would have passed by without even noticing it existed.’

‘I can smell it. The sweets these people make are amazing. Come.’ Taking my hands, she guided me in front of the serving window. ‘Two house specialty.’ Bea placed the order.

I couldn’t really see what she was getting for us. ‘What’s house specialty?’

‘The most delicious cake they have. It’s made out of scraps.’

‘Scraps!?’ Yeah, sure that soundedamazing...

‘Trust me on this one.’

‘$0.60 it’s 50% off. Closing time,’ The cashier was announcing yet another bargain.

‘Do you get everything at sale prices?’ I laughed as Bea was picking up the bag.

My mind couldn’t really bother with discounts and sales. And one thing was for sure, from then on, neither would Bea’s. Her old life will be put on a shelf behind her, along with the memories of missing out on a few meals in order to survive.

And if I had any kind of doubt as to where she learned all of the tricks from, she was clearing it up once again, ‘Ferris, there were times when I couldn’t afford even what wason sale. And I’m not talking about clothes or who knows what luxury. I’m talking about food. Everyone in the Pit lives like that, and even if from time to time they could afford a normal meal or what ever else they needed, they still chose the discounted one because you never know what tomorrow may bring. We don’t have government allowances to live off of. Hell, we don’t even have bank accounts. Most of the revenues go undeclared anyway so the employers won’t pay taxes. No premium healthcare. In fact, no healthcare at all.’

Never realized things were fucked up to that level. ‘Sometimes I’m.... let’s just say I’m spending too much time in the house.’

‘That’s why I wanted you to come out with me today. To see reality. Most of the people here share your pain. It may not have resulted from the same actions, but their struggle is real.Thisis who I want to help.Thisis what I want to change.’ I finally realized that the night wasn’t about her, or even us. It was a much bigger picture.

I understood where she was coming from, but there was something else on my mind besides our plan to rule the city — dessert. At least the type of dessert I could get there on the street. ‘And we will.Together. Now, give me that bag. I’m like the fucking Cookie Monster. I need to see what’s in it.’ I snatched the bag and began stuffing my face with the cakes inside, ‘This is delicious.’ Fuck the Michelin-star chef, I was falling in love with the scraps from the Pit.

‘It’s made out of all the dough that’s leftover from when they make the rest of the cakes. Then they fill it with different flavored cream.’ Bea was trying to explain what was in them, but all I knew was that they had heaven inside.

‘I never had a reason to get out of the house, but this is one now.’ In fact, I was even thinking of buying the whole place.

‘I thought I was your reason. Maybe take me out on a walk.’ Bea was playing the strings to my heart.

However, since I wasn’t gettingdessert, I was actually getting dessert. That one was her fault. ‘On a walk to get cakes you mean!?’

At least she caught on that I was only joking... or not, ‘You just broke my heart,’ she pouted, handing me her cake, ‘Here you go, Cookie Monster. Have mine since you’re ditching me for a piece of dough.’

‘A delicious piece of dough. You’re seriously not going to eat that!?’ I was accepting her offer.

‘No. I’m not going to eat that.’ She caught onto my arm, ready for us to walk away.

‘That’s the best thing I’ve heard today.’ I said, managing to perform a magic trick and make the cake disappear… inside my stomach. ‘My sugar rush got the best of me,’ I snickered, as I signaled for a cab, ‘We really need to get back.’

‘Why, is it curfew?’ Sarcasm seemed to be herthing.
