Did we just have a moment?

He grabs my free hand and starts walking me out of my bedroom. I silently follow him out of the mansion. A pair of black Rolls Royces and a limousine are waiting for us. Lev leads me to the limo in the middle, and I assume his men will take the other two.

I’m surprised when he holds the door open for me and helps me in.

Where the hell is the Devil I’m used to?

I have never seen him act as gentlemanly as he is now!

Once I’m in the vehicle, I feel even more confused and unsettled. He fills the space like he owns it. Which, of course, he does. I only wish he didn’t have the same effect on me. I guess I can cope with*cough*being filled, but being owned is a whole different ballgame.

I try to keep my attention on the street as the vehicle drives out of the property. My resolve almost breaks when Lev fixes his unwavering eyes on me throughout the drive. I try ignoring it but I feel his steady stare as if it’s a physical touch. A touch that explores every inch of me.

I don’t know how long it takes before we drive into a palatial property, but I’m breathless with need when we get there. Though, I stare in surprise at the huge house taking up the center of the property. As we pull up, streams of luxury vehicles head in around us.

“Whose party is this?” I ask, realizing that I don’t even know where he’s taking me.

Lev shrugs as the driver tries to find a parking spot for us.

“Leonardo Dinara,” Lev replies. I don’t know who this person is, but I don’t have any illusions. Probably a notorious criminal.

I take a brief glance at the men prowling around the compound. Their aura screams danger. It leaves me with a sense of being in the company of a ticking time bomb.

“Stay with me,” Lev says, his expression deadly serious. “Don’t wander off alone.” A thousand warning bells go off in my head.

“What is this party in honor of?” I ask. Lev stares at me for a while. Instead of answering my question, he smirks before he taps on the door. One of his men opens it for him, and he steps out. I’m about to open my own door, but Lev is there before I can get out. He holds out his hand, and I have no choice but to take it.

“Tonight is not the night to defy me,Solnishko. Stay with me at all times. There are dangerous people in there,” Lev whispers into my ear as he leads me to the entrance.

Before I can think anything of his words, a pair of hefty guards stop us right before the entrance. A lady in a similar suit to the men steps in front of me.

“Your purse please?” she says briskly.

I glance at Lev, and he nods in response. I hand my clutch to her, then watch as she checks the contents before she hands it back to me.

“I need to search you now,” she says. I glance at Lev again and find the men running a handheld device over his body. The woman in front of me holds a similar piece of equipment out to me. I wait as she runs it from my head to my feet. A few seconds later, she nods, and urges me forward.

Lev silently takes my hand as the guards hold the door open for us. We walk through the entrance, and music fills the air. More men are waiting in the hallway, and we’re subjected to yet another security check.

About five security checks later, I have no doubt that this party must be some sort of high-profile occasion. If the checkpoints aren’t enough, the CCTV cameras strategically placed to cover all corners are more than a hint.

By the time we step through a pair of huge ornamental doors into a large space beyond, I almost can’t believe we made it this far. But the room beyond is worth the wait. It’s vast and glittering, dominated by chandeliers that hang from vaulted ceilings. Candelabra and huge vases of fragrant flowers adorn the long tables that surround an area that looks like a dance floor. The décor is beyond simple luxury, and the guests mingling within seem to fit right in.

Without thinking, I raise a hand and run my fingers over the glittering gems encircling my throat. I am surprised when Lev drops my hand, then wraps his arm around my waist to pull me closer. I briefly glance at his face, but his expression remains impassive.

As we move closer to the crowd, I become more conscious of the people around me. Lev wasn’t joking when he said the party was filled with dangerous people. As a mafia daughter, I know better than to be fooled by their civil look; their suits and dresses aren’t enough disguise for the menace that seems to lurk within.

“Come,” Lev murmurs into my ear. It causes one of those annoying ripples of sensation that I can’t seem to quell whenever he’s near me. I allow him to lead me to a table, trying not to let my nervousness show as I grow aware of a hush that descends.

Somehow, it feels like all eyes are upon me.

And then I look at the guests at our table, and a fresh sense of dread takes hold.
