“I decided that I should,” Lev responds, then glances toward me. “Bella, meet Aurora. Aurora this is Bella,” he says. Bella gives me a brief glance and the distaste in her eyes is as clear as day before she returns her attention to Lev.

Aurora?

Not “Aurora, my wife”?

The omission isn’t lost on me, and I find myself filled with an irrational hatred for this woman. Or maybe not so irrational. It’s clear that they are no strangers to each other. The hunger in her eyes as she looks at Lev and the way Lev is looking at her make it perfectly clear that the two share some history.

Suddenly, I find myself thinking about how Lev was away for three days. How he said that he would have his needs quenched in someone else’s bed if I didn’t give him what he wanted.

Did he see her during that time?

He made no secret of the fact that he could find sex elsewhere. Suddenly I’m feeling a rage swirling inside me.

“You know how this works,” Lev is saying to her.

“Of course, I do. But then again, I know how everything works with you,” she laughs and I swear her eyes drift to Lev’s crotch. His crotch! I watch Lev, and he does nothing. It’s as though he is enjoying this.

For fuck’s sake, Aurora!

Why didn’t you expect something like this to happen?

Are you so desperate to mean something to someone that you almost believed you matter to him?

He’s already told me where I stand goddammit! An incubator for his heirs. That was the whole fucking deal! That’s how this marriage came about! Why do I keep forgetting about that?

As for women like Bella…

I swallow hard.

Women like Bella will warm my side of his bed when I’ve served my purpose. The rush of pain that washes over me leaves me swaying slightly. I grit my teeth and hold my head high. It’s one thing dragging me to this goddamn party, but the least he could do is show me some respect and not to dangle his fucking mistress in front of me.

“Excuse me for a moment,” I mutter before I turn around and leave them.

“Aurora,” I hear Lev call, but I ignore him as I quicken my steps.

I don’t know what direction I’m taking. All I know is that I have to get away as far from Lev as possible. I turn, somehow hoping that he’s following me, but of course he’s not. And that’s all I need to know.

Stop being a fool, Aurora.

You should have expected this!

I want to scream out my rage as I step out of the hall –with still no sign of him following me. Probably too busy eyeball-fucking her. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up going home alone.

I’m so lost in my thoughts that I barely notice I’m on a collision path with another guest until I run straight into what feels like a brick wall.

“Oh! God! I’m so sorry!” I blurt, then stop abruptly when I find Alonso staring at me.

Shit!

I step backward and frantically glance around. I realize I’m in an unfamiliar hallway, and there is nobody around.

“So we meet again, beautiful.” He’s openly staring at me. The hunger in his eyes is impossible to miss and I recoil instinctively.

“My apologies…I’m so clumsy. I’ll get out of your way,” I quickly babble as I turn to leave. But Alonso’s hand snaps out and he grabs me by the arm. He pulls me back and turns me to face him.

“Let me go!” I say as firmly as I can, but my heart is thumping wildly. It’s obvious he’s dangerous. As if to prove me right, he leers at me.

“Why would I let go of such a beauty?” he says darkly. My eyes dart around, looking for a way out. Bolting for the exit would be awkward, but right now, I’d do it. Except with my wrist still locked in his grip, I can’t move.
