What the fuck am I going to do about her?

The reminder of her betrayal has me filled with a range of unwanted emotions. I want to draw closer to her, but at the same time, I’m afraid of what will happen if what she’s doing runs deeper than I thought. Too many questions remain unanswered; too many new suspicions arise with almost every interaction. And it’s not lost on me that the woman she’s meeting is Mexican… just like the people who murdered my family.

Yet I don’t want to lose this new feeling that’s building inside me.

Even though I know I’m almost certain I’m going to regret it.

Her breathing gradually grows steady while I hold her firmly. I don’t know how long I lie thinking before I drift off into a restless sleep.

I wake abruptly in the middle of the night when I hear gunshots. I’ve been in the game long enough to instantly recognize the sound and I don’t need to be told twice that something is very fucking wrong.

Aurora sits up beside me and stares at me with eyes wide from uncertainty.

“Lev, what’s going on?” She frantically glances around.

“We’re under attack,” I mutter as I jump out of bed. I find my clothes quickly, making a mental note to collect my weapons. I’m confident that my men are already reacting.

Thank fuck for the endless training sessions.

“Oh, my God! By who?” Aurora asks as I finish dressing.

“My men and I will handle this,” I grit out, ignoring her question. Confidence aside, there’s no accounting for what we might run into out there. The memories of my mother and sister are never far from my thoughts. I turn back to Aurora, taking her face in my hands. “I need you to do something, and this time, you will do as I say, do you understand?” I wait until she nods rapidly. “Do not leave this room. As soon as I leave, I want you to lock the door. Am I clear?” She nods again, eyes huge on her pale face.

I’m about to dash out when she calls after me.

“Lev!" Her eyes are tortured when I look into them. “Please be safe,”

I pause for a moment, taking in her earnest expression.

Does she really mean it?

Or is this all part of the act?

There’s no denying her body’s response to me, but as far as what lurks in her heart…

There, I’m at a loss.

“Lock the door,” I say curtly.

I leave her room and wait until I hear the key turn in the lock. It only gives my jangling nerves a brief reprieve.

Despite the gunfire outside, the hall is too quiet.

Something’s wrong.

Moving silently along the wall, alert to every movement around me, I go to my office and open the secret gunsafe there. I pick out several weapons before I leave. The gunshots get louder as I draw closer to the entrance.

I’m surprised to findSergeiin the hallway. I sent him to secure the cargo at one of our ports along with twelve of the other men. I didn’t expect him to be here now.

“Boss,” Sergei says as he glances outside.

“What going on?” I ask him as I cock my gun.

“It’s a fucking mess out there,” he says, annoying me as he states the obvious.

“Explain,” I snap, running an eye around the interior of the room. Just as in the hallway and the other rooms I’ve been through, there’s no sign of the rest of my team.

“There’s something wrong with the on-site security crew,” he says, and I freeze.
